Join us for two events celebrating the work and legacy of conceptual artist, Armando Rascón! 🎨

As the Borderlands Institute is launching its fall speaker series, Armando Rascón will lead a discussion exploring his decades of work in cultural activism and AIDS awareness. The discussion will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 2, from 6–7:30 p.m. at the SDSU Imperial Valley Library.

The celebration continues Thursday, Sept. 3, from 5–8 p.m. with the opening reception for “Proof of Concept: Retrospecting the Ephemeral and Activist Art of Armando Rascón” at the John H. Steppling Art Gallery. The exhibition will remain open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9–11:30 a.m. starting Sept. 3 through Oct. 1.

A new era of STEM is happening at SDSU Imperial Valley! 🧪 Jose Uribe, assistant professor of chemistry and one of the first faculty hired for SDSU Imperial Valley’s new chemistry program, is helping students connect science with real-world challenges in the region. His research focuses on water quality, lithium analysis, microplastics and environmental monitoring.

With the new Sciences and Engineering Laboratories in Brawley, Uribe hopes to prepare students to pursue careers in chemistry that will make an impact in their own communities.

The launch of the new chemistry program at SDSU Imperial Valley is another step in chemistry’s longstanding history of paving new paths for SDSU. In addition to playing a large role in helping the university reach R1 status, chemistry was the first doctoral degree program for both SDSU and the California State University (CSU) system.

Then, stop by Tuesday, Aug. 25, for Pizza with the Deans, where you can meet with Campus Dean, Guillermina Gina Nuñez-Mchiri, and Henry Villegas, Student Affairs Dean, while enjoying pizza from Karen’s Bakery. Congratulations to Neda Shamsalizadeh, associate professor in nursing, who has become the first tenured faculty member in the SDSU Imperial Valley School of Nursing! đź‘Ź Her achievement reflects years of dedication to educating and preparing future nurses while advancing health care in the Imperial Valley and beyond.

From her journey from her home country of Iran to Imperial Valley, Shamsalizadeh continues to inspire the next generation of nursing professionals and strengthen our community through education.
