Iffy Eats Monsters for Breakfast by Bryan Timothy Mitchell is a children’s science fiction/fantasy novel. The story follows Kristine as she and her family move into their new house. She immediately gets the feeling that something is not right with their new place. At first, no one believes her. Her parents blame her imagination and the house being just too new for her. However, things take a sinister turn when three goblins begin to destroy their house, and Kristine could not help but be scared of them. Their weapon of choice: pinecones and acorns. But goblins were the last of her worries as an evil entity called Mr. Mischief, who seemed to feed on her fear, appeared. To help her out is Kristine’s imaginary friend, Iffy, who devours monsters. Together, they try to bring an end to the terror inflicted by Mr. Mischief and the goblins. But can they? Who will believe them?

Author Bryan Timothy Mitchell created a fun, entertaining, and very well-done story with a strong protagonist. I absolutely loved Kristine and her determination to sort out the issue. The goblins were incredibly irksome and reminded me of Peeves, the poltergeist from the Harry Potter series. They loved wreaking havoc in the house and tried to scare Kristine. She knew she had to fight her fears and face them head-on if she wanted her house to be safe. Her friendship with Iffy was adorable and very encouraging at the same time. Mr. Mischief was believable, and the plan to trap him was fun. The pace of the story was fast, and the characters were likable. Iffy Eats Monsters for Breakfast is perfect for young readers who need a boost of confidence and to learn that they can do or overcome anything as long as they believe in themselves.
