The term “A-player” comes from Dr. Brad Smart and his son Geoff in the book Topgrading: How Leading Companies Win by Hiring, Coaching, and Keeping the Best People. He uses the term “A-player,” along with Bs and Cs, as part of a successful hiring system he’s created and written about extensively.

What I find particularly interesting is the impact of not dealing with the issues that Bs and Cs can create in a business — to the detriment of A-players.

What Is Rugged Individualism? And Why You Might Be Guilty Of It

Choosing to become an entrepreneur (and assuming all the risk this entails) requires a certain do-it-yourself spirit, or “rugged individualism.” You’re confident about what you have to offer, whether that’s a product, service, or other commodity, and you believe you’re capable enough to get it into the marketplace. You also accept that, in the absence of a traditional work structure, you’ll have to do everything yourself.

It’s a mindset that is not only necessary in the beginning, but serves you well and allows your business to grow.

Eventually, however, you reach an entrepreneurial ceiling. More growth means more demands on your time and energy, but because you’ve always done everything yourself, you get stuck in this operating system.

It’s important to realize that you’re simply not good at everything involved in having a successful business, and you probably don’t enjoy all of it, either. You’ve also been in charge for so long that you don’t trust that anyone else can do it as well (much less better).

A Unique Approach To Personal Productivity: Three Strategies For Those With Short Attention Spans

A number of years ago, I realized that my approach to being productive needed to be quite different from what seemed to work for others. I always struggled to feel productive, to focus, to handle the day-to-day tasks and to hit deadlines. After experimenting with every day planner and time-tracking system I could get my hands on and finding that nothing worked, I realized that I’d need to come up with my own personal productivity system that would work for me.

In my daily work life, I work exclusively with entrepreneurs, and most of them are just like me. They’re paying attention to a lot of things at once and have tons of ideas but short attention spans, especially for detailed activities that require following through.
