Tiny creatures can reveal big clues about a stream.

Aquatic insects and other small organisms respond differently to pollution. By identifying the creatures they find, young people can use stream bioassessment to learn about water quality and the health of a stream.

4-H Alabama Water Watch gives students the opportunity to become citizen scientists as they learn about water quality. Through hands-on activities in classrooms and outdoors, youth explore water monitoring, interpret what they find and learn how they can help care for Alabama’s waterways.

As Tropical Storm Isaias, pronounced ees-ah-EE-ahs, develops in the Gulf, Alabama Extension encourages everyone to review hurricane preparations at home, at work, and on the farm.

Review emergency plans and confirm important contacts.
Take steps to protect your family, property, and important records.
Prepare livestock, crops, and farm equipment.
After the storm, stay clear of fallen trees, loose debris, and downed power lines.

Monitor updates from the National Hurricane Center and your local National Weather Service office, and follow instructions from local emergency officials.

Alabama After Dark: Meet the opossum!

When night falls, one of Alabama’s most misunderstood neighbors begins searching for its next meal.

The Virginia opossum is the only marsupial, or pouched mammal, native to the United States. These adaptable, nocturnal animals eat a varied diet that includes insects, rodents and carrion. By consuming these foods, opossums may help control damage to gardens and lawns while serving as part of nature’s cleanup crew.

Opossums are known for “playing possum,” but that is not usually their first response to danger. Most will try to escape. If cornered, they may hiss, growl or display their approximately 50 teeth.

They may look intimidating, but opossums rarely follow through on these defensive bluffs. They also have a remarkable resistance to many viruses and rarely contract rabies.

Planning a fall camping trip or an evening around the fire? Where you get your firewood matters.

Firewood can carry destructive insects and diseases, even when it looks clean and dry. Moving it to a new location can introduce pests that threaten trees and wildlife habitat.

Help protect Alabama’s forests by buying firewood near where you plan to burn it. Choosing local wood also supports local suppliers and keeps dollars in your community.

Introducing Alabama After Dark, an October series exploring the wildlife that moves through our state after sunset and around twilight. We’re starting with bats!

Alabama is home to 16 bat species. These often-misunderstood mammals help control insects, and some bats also disperse seeds. They aren’t blind, either: Bats can see and use echolocation to navigate and find insect prey.

Throughout the series, we’ll meet more of Alabama’s fascinating wildlife, from owls and opossums to spotted salamanders and bobcats.
