College Corners School

Steve Nelson added the following to the College Corners School’s history when we spoke Sunday.

“My father, Louis Nelson, attended College Corners from the mid 1920’s through the early 1930’s. He always joked that the reason he was so smart was because he went to a school named College Corners. 😀. He said he had three teachers during his time there: Florabelle Dixon, Gail Wynkoop, and Josephine Getts.”

It was a sunny Sunday and a great day for an ice cream social and community reunion at the historic College Corners School in DeKalb County (near Butler, Indiana.)
A hundred (or two hundred?) enthusiastic neighbors, friends, relatives, and former one room school students gathered to reconnect, enjoy ice cream and home made cookies, tour the restored schoolhouse, and check out the beautiful 1926 Model T displayed by John Smith.
Many, many thanks are due to our hosts Wayne and Deb King and their extended family, especially daughter Karen King Mack, who brought it all together and to the Hazel and Dean Weicht family represented now by granddaughter Cathy Weicht Baker who did the original restoration.
DeKalb County Historian Mary Hollabaugh Diehl was invaluable to this startup endeavor/event with her leadership, experience, and energy.
Heartfelt thanks to all who joined in and contributed to the celebration.

Hazel Weicht was determined to save the College Corners School. She enlisted her three adult sons and two daughters in the project. Windows and flooring were salvaged from the nearby, and nearly identical, Jerusalem School on State Road 1 in the rebuilding of this Indiana DeKalb County Franklin Township one-room school.
Long ago Jerusalem School was where I went as a first and second grader.

Several years ago students in Butler Elementary's Little Hoosiers local history club from the nearby DeKalb Eastern School District (Eastside) researched the history of the College Corners School and then raised the funds for the historic marker.
