Have you been following along with the foster care stats this week? Well, here's the kicker: on any given day, there are nearly 437,000 children in the foster care system here in the United States! WHAAATT?! How can that be?!

Did you know that most of those children are placed with nothing more than the clothes they were wearing when they were taken from their families? Those that have something to their name often arrive with a trash bag containing their belongings - old, worn out clothing and shoes, grungy blankets or stuffed animals, a crinkled photograph or two. Is that any way for our children to live?!

This week, my team and I are running a book drive to help bring some awareness to these staggering statistics, and a sense of value to the children affected by our Foster Care System here in the United States. We are providing them with NEW books and teddy bears that they can call their OWN.

Through our partnership with the My Stuff Bags Foundation and YOUR help, my team at Usborne Books & More and I will help this amazing organization stuff THOUSANDS of bright blue duffel bags with brand new personal belongings: age- and gender-appropriate toys, books, a stuffed animal, school supplies, clothing, personal toiletries, and a warm, often handmade "security" blanket – all theirs to keep!

Have you ever heard that "adoption is a long process"? Why is that?! Why, when there are families willing to adopt children, must they wait for **a year and a half** to complete the process?!

Do you look forward to your birthday each year? Do you make plans with family and friends to celebrate? Do you enjoy cake, ice cream, gifts, and laughter?

For 17,000 kids each year, their 18th birthday is nothing like this; it's the year that they age out of the system. They're no longer eligible for services, which means that they no longer have a place to call home. Can you imagine?!

Have you ever noticed that time seems to move so quickly when you're having fun, and yet it passes at a snail's pace when you're waiting anxiously for something to happen?

Imagine being a child whose parents' rights have been terminated. You've bounced from house to house, group home to shelter, just waiting to be adopted by a family where you might fit in. The saddest truth? You may never get that chance! You might turn 18 before that happens, and then what?!

Think about the fear, the anxiety, the stress that children must feel when they're in that position! Can you imagine?!
