Today we had a wonderful surprise. Congressman Webster stopped by to present the results of the Congressional Art Competition for District 11. Florida's 11th congressional district is a congressional district in the U.S. state of Florida. It includes Sumter County, and parts of Lake, Orange, and Polk counties.

He thanked all of our wonderful participants and let us know that we had not just first place, but second place as well. The Congressman and his staff said that they didn’t think that another school had done that before.

Junior, Angelina Lusetti placed second with her dynamic pastel eagle. Her piece will be framed and hung in one of the Congressman’s office in Washington DC for one year.

Sophomore, Gabrielly Villegas placed first with her watercolor collection of state flowers and insects. She researched the state flower or insect to represent all 50 states. Her piece will be framed and hung in the pedestrian tunnel between Congress and the Capitol in Washington DC for one year. Gabrielly will also be flown with a parent to Washington DC for the opening reception of the display of all 435 Compressional Districts.

We had so many awesome submissions and it’s so wonderful to see our art students recognized.

If you would like to see these pieces in person, the Art Department will be displaying these and more including pieces from all art classes, including the display of the AP Art students’ portfolios that they have been working on tirelessly this whole year.

The show will be in conjunction with the Band’s spring concert next Friday, 5/3 at 6pm in SSHS’s gym. Please come support our talented students!

Pre-AP did a great job with their altered portraits. :) Right now they are working on a colored pencil pice with the theme of Man vs. Nature. They have spent a couple of years learning techniques of different mediums and are learning how to brainstorm and create pieces based on prompts and what reflects them as an artist. I love helping them working towards finding their own voice.

So every year, the AP students must create a portrait for The Memory Project. It is an amazing organization.

The Memory Project gets its name from its first intention, which was to provide handmade, heartfelt portraits as special memories to children in orphanages. Now our intention has expanded to touching the lives of youth around the world facing many types of challenges, while opening our hearts and minds so they can touch ours in return.

Together we are using art to reach a distant destination: a kinder world in which all youth see themselves in one another regardless of differences in their appearance, culture, religion, or circumstances. For all who believe in that kinder world on the horizon, it is impossible to turn around.

This year, the AP students created portraits for students in Nigeria. The portraits were delayed in being delivered due to the schools being closed because of threats of violence, but they were finally delivered on 3/7. The joy on these kids’ faces just melts my heart. These kids did such an amazing job on their portraits. They are fantastic!

Art 1 is doing a great job learning how to draw a still life. They had to make the origami themselves, work together as a group to decide on a composition and lighting; photograph the origami and draw it. They have done a fantastic job!
