It get weird out here sometimes

In 1969, Supremes singer Cindy Birdsong was kidnapped at knife point. Her escape involved throwing herself from a moving car onto a Los Angeles freeway.

Birdsong had joined The Supremes two years earlier, replacing Florence Ballard and stepping into one of the most famous female groups in America. Fame also made her recognizable to millions of strangers. One of them became dangerously obsessed.

On December 2, 1969, Birdsong returned to her Los Angeles apartment and encountered Charles Collier, a maintenance worker in the building who had reportedly been pursuing her. He confronted her with a knife, forced her into her own car and ordered her to drive.

At some point during the ordeal, Birdsong made a decision that could easily have killed her.

While the car was traveling on the freeway, she opened the door and jumped.

She hit the pavement and suffered cuts and bruises, but she survived. A passing motorist stopped to help her, and police were called.

The kidnapping became an unsettling chapter in a career usually remembered for glamorous gowns, television appearances and Motown hits. Birdsong returned to The Supremes after the attack and continued performing.

Her ordeal also came during an extraordinarily turbulent period for the group. Diana Ross was preparing to leave, Jean Terrell would soon become lead singer, and the most commercially successful incarnation of The Supremes was coming to an end.

Birdsong, meanwhile, had survived something far more immediate than a change in the charts.

She had been forced into a car at knifepoint and decided that hitting the freeway was a better chance than finding out where her kidnapper intended to take her.
