Two questions, sent in a single email to a handful of former students, now friends, led to a show unlike any other.

1. “What was your most difficult experience during junior high?” and
2. “If you could write to yourself in the middle of that time. what would you say?”

"Letters to My Self," the winter drama presented this weekend at Metcalf Middle School, stands on the belief that there is power in telling our stories: power both for the storyteller in claiming the strength, the change, the resolve in the stories themselves, and power for the listener, to find a connection which denies the isolation our pain may attempt to deceive us into believing.

Written by Metcalf director and teacher Steven Orth, the play’s dialogue and actions come--often word-for-word--from his former students’ emailed replies. Letters to My Self tells one story through many tales. Each vignette offers more than memories of the past—it brings to light the darkness of the present and seeks to inspire hope for not only the far-off future but hope to help us through today. Many of the words offered are not those of the recognized playwright but of the courageous former students he now calls friends. Perhaps, in one Letter (or more), you may hear your own voice speaking your own story, your own truth, and your own hope.

The Metcalf Drama Experience has for twenty-two years brought thoughtful, entertaining theatre to the Metcalf Middle (and Junior High) School community. We believe premiering never-before-seen shows offers a unique experience both for our cast and crew as well as our audience. Don’t miss a moment of the final season: Come and feel why we are the Drama Experience.

Performances are Thursday, Jan. 9, Friday, Jan. 10, and Saturday, Jan. 11, beginning at 7 p.m. There is also a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday. All shows are in the Metcalf Middle School gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 and are available at the door.

Students in Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 will be on winter break from Monday, Dec. 23 through Wednesday, Jan. 1. All schools will be back in session on Thursday, Jan. 2.

During winter break, school buildings will be closed, with the exception of those schools hosting Project KIDS school-age child care programs (Dec. 26-27 at Harriet Bishop, Gideon Pond and Rahn elementary schools), pre-scheduled events through the district’s Community Education department, and activity/athletic practices and events at Burnsville High School.

The District 191 Community Education office, located in the lower level of Diamondhead Education Center, 200 W. Burnsville Pkwy., will be open Dec. 26-27 and Dec. 30. Ready to Grow/Ready to Learn and other Community Education classes will be taking place on those days as well.

District offices, including the District Enrollment Center, will be closed to the public from Dec. 23 through Jan. 1, and will reopen on Jan. 2. Messages may be left at the main switchboard at (952) 707-2000 or e-mailed to [email protected] and will be answered when staff members return.

Polls will be open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5, when One91 voters will decide on one question - whether to increase school funding by about $1.7 million.

If approved, two current voter-approved levies would be revoked & replaced with one levy of $1,900/pupil or the max allowed by state law (levy cap), whichever is less.

Because the proposed levy would replace the district’s existing levies, approval would mean fewer elections would be needed in the future.

If not approved, District 191 will face an expected $5.5 million budget shortfall, staff and programming will be reduced, and the ability to provide student support services will be limited.

Metcalf Middle School student leaders met with Principal Shannon McParland and Assistant Principal Eddie Blaylark on Monday to discuss and provide their feedback on the school's mission statement and student handbook.

The advisory group will meet throughout the school year to provide student voice to school administrators and feedback about what's going well and what could be improved at the school.

Right now, there are only 8th grade students in the group, but 6th and 7th graders will have the opportunity to join later in the year.

Burnsville High School Theatre Guild’s summer camp, “Dear Edwina, Jr.,” runs June 17-21, which will culminate with three performances in the Mraz Center for the Performing Arts.

The camp will be held 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. daily at Burnsville High School and is open to students entering grades 6-9 for the 2019-2020 school year.

The cost for the camp is $100, and checks can be made payable to Burnsville High School Theatre Guild.

Final performances are slated for June 21 at 7 p.m. and June 22 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Tickets for the show will be $10 for adults and $8 for students. Doors will open 30 minutes prior to each show.
