John L. Braese
VALE – The La Grande cross country team does not usually make the trip to Vale for the annual Dash-N-Splash. After the showing on Thursday, Aug. 27, the Tiger girls may want to make the race an annual trek.

The La Grande girls grabbed the top four individual finishes on their way to the team title over the two-mile course. Junior Lindsey Brown crossed the finish in 12 minutes, 6.16 seconds for the win and also was able to visit with her former coach, Pine Eagle’s Gail Kimberling. Brown was followed by freshman Evelyn Segrin, senior Frances Edelen and sophomore Rose Edelen.

The Baker girls grabbed second place led by sophomore Austin Hilton and her fifth place showing. Host Vale was third in the standings and saw junior Eden Galkowski take 12th in the individual standings.

The Hilander girls finished just two points behind the host Vikings and were led by junior Hadley Gunderson. The Nyssa girls saw senior Isabella Arreola just outside the top 10 in 11th.

Coaches pick contenders in the state’s medium-sized classifications

Quick update on one of our favorites from the past.

On Saturday, Aug. 22, the Eastern Oregon University volleyball team pushed their season record to 8-0 with a win over Northwestern.

The day proved to be pretty good for former Hilander Akylah Kaino. She ended the match with 10 kills and six blocks!

(Inside joke-Akylah is having a great season, don't walk your dog).
