Nadcap Fusion Welding Audit Tip. Pre-Weld Cleaning.

Pre-weld cleaning is more than having a cleaning procedure.

When preparing for an AC7110/5 audit, verify that:

Parts are clean and free from contaminants before welding.
Cleaning tools are identified to prevent cross-contamination.
Cleaned parts are protected from recontamination.
Required cleaning-to-welding time limits are controlled.
Fixtures and tooling contacting the work are also maintained clean.
Filler material is cleaned and protected from contamination.

Welding position matters in aerospace welder qualification.

A welder’s qualification should cover the positions they will use in production. AWS D17.1 provides guidance on how the qualification test position determines the production welding positions covered.

The four basic welding positions are:
• Flat
• Horizontal
• Vertical
• Overhead

When planning or reviewing welder qualifications:
• Identify the actual welding positions used in production.
• Select qualification tests that provide the required coverage.
• Check the qualified positions for both groove and fillet welds.
• Verify other applicable limits, including material group, thickness, and tube diameter.
• Document the qualification coverage for those assigning welding work.

One test may qualify a welder for multiple positions, but the coverage depends on the test position, weld type, and whether the test uses sheet or tube.

AWS D17.1 and AWS D17.2 both apply to aerospace welding, but they control different welding processes.

AWS D17.1 focuses on fusion welding processes such as GTAW (TIG). Compliance depends heavily on qualified welding procedures, qualified personnel, joint preparation, shielding, filler material, heat input, inspection, and workmanship.

AWS D17.2 focuses on resistance spot and seam welding.
Greater emphasis is placed on machine qualification, validated weld schedules, welding current, time, electrode force, electrode condition, production witness samples, and process repeatability.

In either case, the procedures and qualification records must align with the work being performed on the shop floor.
