Aerospace Welder Training & Qualification, AWS D17.1

Amer Welding Solutions provides hands on welder training and welder qualification support for aerospace manufacturers in accordance with AWS D17.1, Specification for Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications.

Our training and qualification programs support a range of aerospace materials, including:
* Aluminum alloys
* Stainless steels
* Carbon and alloy steels
* Titanium alloys
* Nickel-based alloys

Our training is focused on preparing welders not only to complete the qualification test, but to produce welds capable of meeting the applicable visual, metallographic or radiographic inspection requirements of AWS D17.1.

We work directly with welders on material cleaning and preparation, fit-up, heat input, pe*******on, and other variables that can directly affect qualification results.

Amer Welding Solutions can support the complete qualification process, including qualification planning, test coupon preparation, WPS review, hands-on training, qualification testing, laboratory coordination, and welder qualification documentation.

Our goal is to develop qualified welders who understand the process and can consistently produce aerospace quality welds on the production floor.

Preparing for a welder qualification per AWS D17.1?

The qualification starts before the first arc is struck.

A few items to verify before testing:

• Approved WPS and applicable qualification requirements
• Base material, filler metal, and fixtures are properly cleaned and protected from contamination
• Welding booth is clean and organized to minimize contamination risks
• Correct base material and filler metal have been verified
• Proper tungsten size and preparation
• Shielding gas purity, and flow rates have been confirmed
• Machine setup and welding parameters match the approved procedure
• Proper fit-up, joint preparation, and fixturing of the test coupon
• Required inspection equipment and qualification documentation are available

Sometimes welders fail qualification tests because of setup issues, contamination, or poor preparation, not because they couldn’t weld.

A controlled setup removes unnecessary variables and gives the welder the best opportunity to demonstrate their true skill.

Resistance welding is widely used in aerospace manufacturing because it provides repeatable, high-production joining of thin sheet materials and foil assemblies.

Small changes in electrode condition, machine performance, or process controls can have a significant impact on weld quality and repeatability.

AWS C1.1 and AWS J1.2 are great resources for companies looking to improve their resistance welding programs.

One of the best days of 2026 at Lincoln Tech!

I volunteered this week to speak to three different groups of welding students, morning, afternoon, and evening classes about aerospace welding and the career opportunities available in the industry.

One of my goals is to help students who are pursuing a welding career understand the different paths available to them, especially in aerospace welding.

Not all welding environments are the same. Some sectors offer better working conditions, greater career growth, and stronger financial opportunities than others. If I can help students explore those opportunities and make informed decisions about their future, then I know I have made a meaningful impact.

Many students feel uncertain about their future after graduating from a technical school. Some choose the trades because college is not the right path for them financially or personally. Regardless of the reason, they deserve opportunities, guidance, and support as they begin their careers.

If sharing my experience helps even one student build a better future, then the time was well spent.

If your school would like someone to speak about aerospace welding, career development, and opportunities within the welding industry, feel free to reach out.

This is a volunteer effort. There is no fee and no expectation of anything in return, just an opportunity to share knowledge and give back to the welding community.

Welder qualification is more than passing a test coupon. It is about demonstrating skills and providing documentation compliance.

We provide welder qualification and procedure qualification services in accordance with:

• AWS D1.1 – Structural Welding Code – Steel
• AWS D1.2 – Structural Welding Code – Aluminum
• AWS D1.6 – Structural Welding Code – Stainless Steel
• AWS D17.1 – Specification for Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications

Our services include qualification planning, test oversight, documentation review, test record preparation, procedure qualification support, and compliance guidance to help organizations meet customer, code, and industry requirements.

If you have part numbers and unsure which thickness range or base material to qualify, we can help you navigate the qualification process to maximize the coverage of your PQRs and welder qualifications.
