Check out one of our recent publications. This was research carried out by Dr. Chandler Smith and Prof. Eric Hernandez with funding from the National Science Foundation. They found a clever way to find localized damage in large structures by using sparsity-promoting algorithms and vibration measurements. This was published in the Journal of Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing.

Damage identification using eigenvalue shifts is ill-posed because the number of identifiable eigenvalues is typically far less than the number of pot…

What do you do if you are a structural engineer and you are bored the day after Christmas? Build LEGO bridges (from your kid's Christmas gift) and test them.
This one supported 9.10 pounds loaded in the center and 18.0 pounds with loads at approximately 2/3 of the span.
The key lies in the shape of the bridge (arch) and the lateral resistance of the supports

Yesterday I saw this sign at a pizza parlor. I spent 35 minutes eating there and the door never opened, could you make any inference about the "mean time to opening"?
