Our mission is to reform biblical scholarship; to redeem pilgrimage from commercial sightseeing and to renew the mission of the church

The Society for Biblical Studies leads contextual, experiential biblical tours to the lands of the Bible, including Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, and Italy. We work with churches, seminaries, universities, religious leaders and individuals to design journeys that illuminate biblical backgrounds, but also encourage the application of the biblical faith in and for the world.

The image shows a classic 14th-century Persian miniature painting from a manuscript of the Shahnameh (the Persian “Book of Kings”) written by the legendary poet Ferdowsi.Scene Context and SubjectThis exact folio depicts the story of Sindukht becoming aware of her daughter Rudaba’s actions. It dates back to a dispersed Ilkhanid-era manuscript from around 1335 CE.In this narrative:Rudaba (the daughter of Sindukht and King Mehrab Kaboli) has secretly fallen in love with the hero Zal, the father of Rustam.Sindukht (seated on the right, gesturing with her hand) discovers her daughter’s hidden liaison. The interior architectural details, decorative star-patterned tile work, and rich period garments are highly characteristic of early 14th-century provincial Persian painting styles under Mongol/Ilkhanid influence. If you are interested in exploring this manuscript further, I can provide more details about:The literary romance between Zal and Rudaba. The artistic style and characteristics of the 1330s Ilkhanid/Injuid Shahnameh manuscripts.Where other folios from this dispersed book are housed today.
