To record this episode, twelve of us gathered in a room to sing and listen. We listened to ourselves, we listened to each other, we listened for you, we listened to Jordan's presence in the song. When we show up generously present for each other -- as witnesses, not problem-solvers; as appreciators, noticers, yay-sayers -- we become a refuge; a source, an incubator, a greenhouse. You'll hear us showing up for each other in this song, as we go into spontaneous sound. Find the full episode on abreathofsong.com

Recording Jordan Mudd's song, "I Am Listening," with a roomful of vocal improvisers was an absolute joy! We were at the Omega Institute for Back to the Well, five days of vocal improv guided by Rhiannon, Dave Worm, and Zuza Gonçalves -- incredible!!!! You'll hear folk begin to explore harmonies and gradually break off into all kinds of sound as they follow what they hear the song calling out of them. You get to sing with us and listen for what you want to sing -- the core of the song? A rhythmic pattern? A harmony? You sing you!

What is so very cool about this week's song, "Mountain River" is that Kjersten has found a way to embody the river... the upper part light and reflective, swirling with an eight-measure pattern; the lower part slow and steady, rise and fall in a twelve-measure pattern. Hearing the two together, you experience, you become the shift and motion of a river in flow.

I absolutely adore the way Kjersten Hallin's song, "Mountain River" embodies the river by having a low, slow undercurrent that lasts longer than the bubbling, swirling upper layer -- and the two layers sound different on top of each other in different places. Tune in on abreathofsong.com this Wednesday to sing along.

Vermont summer: tubing, canoeing, or kayaking down a river is a favorite pastime. Let the river carry you far enough, you wind up in the Atlantic ocean, riding tidal waves. As I'm going through this shift in my body, figuring out how to be with pain and adapt to reduce it, I've been singing a lot of water-river-ocean songs to myself, especially to help me feel river flow in my body... and so we've got a "Down the River" ribbon of song this week, which includes songs by Scott Kalichstein, Coco Love Alcorn, Moira Smiley, and Kate Valentine.
Listen to the episode at www.abreathofsong.com or on any of your preferred streaming platforms and join me this Sunday, July 26th at 4-5pm (bonus song starting at 3:45) to sing and gather on zoom. Register here: www.juneberrymusic.com/ribbons-of-song.html
