The countdown to the 16th Annual Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Plant Sale on September 16 is officially on!

Our W**d Eaters garden team was hard at work last Thursday, getting the Arbor Gate Teaching Garden ready for the big sale. They cleared away overgrown plants so sale selections could be easily spotted and properly labeled, giving shoppers a chance to see how these plants might look growing in their own gardens.

With that mission accomplished, the crew tackled another challenge: clearing the overgrown vegetation along the sidewalk bordering the garden on Martin Street. Mission accomplished! At this point, we may need to add Brush Masters to our EMGV credentials!

The Arbor Gate Keepers garden team was hard at work in the Arbor Gate Teaching Garden!

Their biggest tasks were tackling weeds in the front wet garden and weeding and pruning in the Victory Garden. They started in the cool shade before moving on to trimming back an overgrown cherry tomato plant and watermelon vine. Several small melons were growing, but none were quite ripe yet. By cutting back the leggy vines, the team hopes to encourage the larger melons to ripen while also giving the garden a tidier appearance for visitors to next month’s Plant Sale on September 16.

A few Victory Garden beds are also ready for some fall planting, so the team hopes to get seeds in the ground soon!

Our EMGVs braved the rain at the Farm Fresh in Graham - FFIG Farmers’ Market earlier this month! Despite a summer downpour, they were on hand to answer gardening questions and share information about the many services the Alamance County Cooperative Extension offers our community.

Keep an eye out this summer at area special events and farmers’ markets for the “Ask a Master Gardener” tent/table.

Plant of the Month: Opuntia • Common Name(s): Cactus Pear; Prickly Pear Cactus; Rabbit Ears Cactus; Tree Cactus • Previously known as: Nopal; Phyllarthus; Platyopuntia; Plutonopuntia

Opuntia, commonly known as the Prickly Pear Cactus, is a striking cactus that adds bold texture and year-round structural interest to the home landscape. Its broad, paddle-shaped pads and vibrant yellow, orange, red, or purple blooms are followed by colorful, edible fruits that attract both gardeners and wildlife. Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, this heat-loving plant is an excellent choice for xeriscapes, rock gardens, and low-maintenance landscapes.

One of the greatest advantages of Opuntia is its exceptional drought tolerance. While many plants struggle during extended dry spells, prickly pear continues to thrive and requires little supplemental water once established, making it an outstanding choice for water-wise gardening. Once established, it requires minimal care while providing dramatic architectural beauty and seasonal flowers, proving that a resilient garden can also be both productive and beautiful.

You can see this plant in person in the Arbor Gate Teaching Garden, located at the Alamance County Cooperative Extension.

Alamance County 4-H Junior Master Gardener Camp recap! Our Junior Master Gardeners had a busy and hands-on three days exploring the world of horticulture!

Day 1: Campers visited Carolina Habitats Native Plant Nursery and learned about native plants before diving into a lesson on pollination.

Day 2: At Pritchett Nursery, campers got hands-on experience with plant propagation and went home with plenty of plants of their own!

Day 3: Campers visited the golf course at N.C. State University to learn about turf, then explored the world beneath our feet by learning about soil, the organisms that live in it, and ways to improve soil health. They even created their own soil mix to take home!

A big thank you to our Extension Master Gardener Volunteers and all of the horticulture professionals who helped make this a fun, educational, and memorable experience for our campers!
