What does advocacy look like in occupational therapy?

For four UVM Doctor of Occupational Therapy students, it meant taking on a challenge that could benefit future generations of OT students across Vermont.

Working alongside faculty, policymakers, professional organizations, and community partners, the students advocated for occupational therapy's inclusion in VSAC's forgivable loan program. Their efforts helped secure access to five-year forgivable loans, reducing a significant financial barrier to pursuing an OT degree.

Although the change won’t benefit them directly, the students focused on supporting future students and helping strengthen Vermont's occupational therapy workforce.

Get a behind-the-scenes look at the Krementsov Lab in UVM’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences!

In a recent Across the Fence interview, undergraduate researcher Julia Young and Ph.D. student Tyler Hogan share how they’re exploring genetics, immunology, and human health while gaining valuable hands-on experience in the lab.

Working alongside faculty mentor Dr. Dimitry Krementsov, they discuss learning new research techniques, tackling scientific questions, and building the skills and confidence that will shape their future careers. Their stories highlight the power of mentorship and the many opportunities CNHS students have to grow as researchers and scientists.

UVM recently unveiled a new plastinated anatomy lab, giving health sciences students an innovative way to study the human body.

Funded through a federal appropriation secured by former Senator Patrick Leahy to support UVM's growing occupational therapy program, the lab features professionally prepared specimens that are long-lasting and highly detailed. Students can explore muscles, nerves, and organs in three dimensions without needing to perform dissections.

Part of a broader investment in advanced teaching spaces, the lab is already making a difference in how students learn and prepare for patient care.

It’s summer, and Rowell Building is quieter than usual, but the hallways are still filled with focused activity as HLTH 2530 Emergency Medical Technician students put their skills to the test in a staged mock school bus crash.

In this course with Nursing Professor Tyler Molleur, students are preparing for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians exam through hands-on, scenario-based training. Clinical simulation events challenge them to lead teams, think critically under pressure, and demonstrate a full range of essential hands-on skills. From patient assessment and airway management to trauma response, CPR, and emergency care across the lifespan, these future EMTs are building the knowledge and judgment needed to save lives.
