Do you have any language fun facts?
“I learned some Tz’utujil when I was in Guatemala, which is one of the 21+ indigenous languages of Guatemala. I am studying in Peru next Spring and I am excited to learn some Quechua. I also speak a small bit of Latvian, a language I would like to learn better because I have a lot of family in Latvia still.”

Last Wednesday the French program hosted Mustafa Soykurt, the Consul General of France in Boston.
In his well-attended talk, Soykurt explained what led him to work internationally where he supports French citizens living abroad and the expansion of French culture. Soykurt noted that the French language is spoken all over the world, and encouraged students to study abroad and be a part of this relationship.
This visit was emblematic of the long history of diplomatic relations between France and the United States, and how this legacy continues today. What a great opportunity for French students at UVM!

Spanish lecturer Adriana Sanchez-Gutierrez, PhD, recently gave a well-attended lecture on the importance of multiculturalism and inclusivity at the South Burlington Public Library!
Drawing on community-based experiences, education, and cultural expression, her presentation explored how multicultural voices challenge dominant narratives and help create more equitable spaces for dialogue. By emphasizing the importance of listening, representation, and linguistic and cultural diversity, the talk invited participants to reflect on how embracing multiple voices strengthens communities, fosters a sense of belonging, and promotes both social and intellectual growth.
