Today one of our PhD students, Peter Euclide, successfully defended his thesis! Peter began in the lab as a masters student with Jason Stockwell studying mysis in Lake Champlain. Upon completing his masters degree, he started his PhD research with Ellen Marsden looking at impacts of habitat fragmentation resulting from causeways in Lake Champlain on a variety of fish species. Congrats Dr. Peter Euclide!

One of our grad students, Taylor Stewart, spent the past few months planning an international workshop titled "Coregonids in the face of climate change: a collaborative global experiment." He did a fantastic job organizing and leading the meeting which was held in . One of the perks included seeing our lab director, Jason Stockwell, who has been on sabbatical in France this semester.

Allison Hrycik, with the help of many lab members, spent the past two days setting up an under-ice experiment on Shelburne Pond. Allison is testing what drives phytoplankton production under ice. During the summer, zooplankton grazing in important in limiting phytoplankton growth, however it is hypothesized that light limitation is the primary limitation for phytoplankton growth in the winter. Allison’s research will help shed “light” on this under ice mystery.

What better way to start the new year then with a conference! Thanks to the Lake Champlain Basin Program for organizing the Lake Champlain Research Conference. Many members of the lab presented talks and posters and had the opportunity to mingle with researchers who are just as motived and concerned for Lake Champlain as we are.

RSENR Professors Rachelle Gould and Jason Stockwell (Rubenstein Ecosystem Science Laboratory) received EPA funding to study blue-green algae toxins in fish used for human consumption and to understand links to human health and well-being. They will work with community partners in Lake Champlain shoreline communities to explore how residents process the science and work to take action.
