A humble VW Beetle was the first production car to conquer Antarctica.
In 1963, the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition brought a mostly-stock, ruby-red Beetle to Mawson Station. The scientists called it the "Red Terror." It had no special modifications—just an air‑cooled engine that wouldn't freeze, a sealed body that kept out blowing snow, and a set of snow chains.
It survived a year of -50°C cold, 200 km/h winds, and rough ice. It towed skiers, carried glaciologists, and even won a rally after returning to Australia. Its whereabouts today are unknown, but its legend remains. 🚗❄️🐧
