There are so many small endings in that we don’t recognize as endings when they happen.

The last time they ask to be carried.

The last time they crawl into your lap.

The last time they reach for your hand without thinking.

We’re often so busy moving through the day that we don’t realize a chapter has closed until we’re already in the next one.

Perhaps that’s part of parenting, too.

Loving who they are now, while quietly saying goodbye to who they were.

Being different from your child isn't a parenting problem.

Sometimes, those differences are exactly what a family needs.

A cautious child may need a parent who helps them take a step forward.

An impulsive child may benefit from someone who naturally slows things down.

A sensitive parent may notice what everyone else has missed.

A strong-willed child may bring movement when the whole family feels stuck.

The difficulty begins when we unconsciously decide that our way is the normal way.

Then different starts to look wrong.

Too sensitive.
Too loud.
Too quiet.
Too stubborn.
Too needy.
Too independent.

give us another way to see those differences.

Understanding who a child is doesn't mean every behavior is okay. Children still need guidance and boundaries.

But we can guide a child without asking them to become someone else.

There are so many things parents do that no one else notices.

The missing shoe found at the last minute.
The favorite snack remembered.
The form signed.
The appointment made.
The small thing tucked into a backpack because someone might need it later.

Much of happens quietly, in hundreds of little acts of remembering and caring.

It may not look like a superpower.

But sometimes, it really is.

So much of childhood is built from ordinary days.

The familiar breakfast.

The same story read again.

A favorite song in the car.

Shoes by the door.

A small tradition that no one thought to call a tradition.

We may not remember every ordinary day we had as children.

But somewhere in us, we remember how those days felt.

The everyday things we do with our children may not seem important while we’re doing them.

But together, they become something very important:

Home.

A lot of parenting happens without recognition.

No applause. No thank you. No one noticing how hard you worked to respond differently.

But your child feels the difference.

And that’s what matters.

At some point in parenting, your pockets become storage for rocks, sticks, wrappers, tiny toys, and things you're under strict instructions not to lose.

To us: clutter.

To them: treasure entrusted to the safest person they know.

You can love your children deeply and still feel tired.

You can be grateful for this life and still look forward to a quiet house at the end of the day.

Those things don’t cancel each other out.

holds a lot of opposites at once. Love and frustration. Joy and exhaustion. Wanting to hold them close and wanting a little space to yourself.

Sometimes bedtime is simply bedtime.

And sometimes, it’s the first moment all day when you can hear yourself think.

You can love your child deeply and still misunderstand each other.

You may think you're giving them space.
They may experience it as distance.

You may think you're offering helpful advice.
They may experience it as criticism.

You may think you're setting a clear boundary.
They may hear rejection.

None of this means the boundary was wrong, or that you need to get every interaction right.

It simply reminds us that every person experiences an interaction through their own nature.

Sometimes understanding begins with getting curious about the space between what we meant and what they received.

Before responding...

Pause.

Take one slow breath.

You may still say exactly the same words.

But they'll come from a very different place.
