Spanish standard for travel, work & everyday Conversations My name is Pili, i´m from to Quetzaltenango, Guatemala.

My city is the best city for study spanish and to experience real life in Guatemala. I´m spanish teacher since 10 years ago and i love my work, i enjoy teaching my lenguage and learning about the differents cultures on the world throught my students. I like to hear the stories of my students and share different opinions on the different topics. Before traveling for the first time to another continent I work in El Quetzal Spanish School is a good school with the best teachers and incredible people, I learned a lot from them.

Learning Spanish isn’t only about the big milestones.

Sometimes progress looks like understanding a sentence without translating every word. Recognizing a word you just learned in a real conversation. Finding another way to say something when the exact word disappears from your brain. Or making a mistake… and continuing anyway.

Those moments may feel small, but they’re signs that Spanish is becoming something you can actually use—not just something you study.

So don’t wait until you “feel fluent” to celebrate your progress.

Did you know Xela is considered Guatemala’s second most important city? 🇬🇹

It isn’t the second largest, but it plays an essential role in western Guatemala. People from nearby cities and towns travel to Xela to study, work, receive medical care, shop, and complete important paperwork.

Many young Guatemalans move there to attend university or find new opportunities. And it isn’t only Guatemalans—many foreigners also come to work, study Spanish, and build a life in Xela.

Is Guatemala always hot? Not in Xela! 🇬🇹

Xela is located in western Guatemala, about 200 kilometers from Guatemala City and more than 2,200 meters above sea level.

Because it is surrounded by mountains and sits at a high altitude, Xela is one of the coldest cities in the country. Mornings and evenings can feel quite chilly, even though the sun may feel warm during the day.

That’s why locals often spend the day putting on and taking off their sweaters!

Why do locals say Xela when the map says Quetzaltenango? 🇬🇹

Before the Spanish conquest, the city was known as Xelajú, a K’iche’ name often interpreted as “under the ten mountains.”

During the conquest, the Náhuatl name Quetzaltenango, commonly interpreted as “place of the quetzals,” began to be used.

Over time, Xelajú was affectionately shortened to Xela—the name most locals use today.
