Learning another language doesn’t have to look perfect to be meaningful. 🤍

My English isn’t perfect. My Spanglish is very real. I still forget words, make mistakes, and sometimes say things in ways a native speaker probably wouldn’t.

But this language has allowed me to fall in love, build a life in another country, create a bilingual family, make friends, work, travel, and connect with people I might have never met otherwise.

So if you’re learning Spanish and still waiting for the day when you finally feel “ready” to use it… don’t.

Use the Spanish you have today.

Make mistakes. Mix languages when you need to. Have an accent. Ask people to repeat themselves. Keep going.

Because maybe the coolest part of learning another language isn’t speaking it perfectly.

It’s everything you get to experience because you decided to speak it anyway.

And that’s kinda chic. 🤍

We finally found somewhere to watch the game! ⚽ l

In this part of the episode, I tell you what happened when we walked into a sports restaurant full of TVs and watched the U.S. score while everyone around us celebrated.

But here’s something I want you to remember: your own stories are one of the best things you can use to practice Spanish.

You don’t always need another grammar exercise.

Think about a game, concert, trip, celebration, or simply a day you remember well. What happened? Who were you with? What was everyone doing?

Now try telling that story in Spanish.

In this episode, my husband and I head downtown to experience the atmosphere, walk among hundreds of soccer fans, and see how the city completely changes during the World Cup.

I have to admit it: I was completely wrong about soccer in the U.S. 😅 /

In this part of the story, I tell you what I used to think about soccer here and what changed my mind when we arrived in downtown Seattle during the World Cup.

You’ll also hear me describing the weather and everything happening around us, so pay attention to the different past tenses I use to tell you what happened and describe the scene.

Here’s a little challenge: watch the clip and then, without watching it again, tell me:

¿Qué llevábamos mi esposo y yo?
¿Qué pensaba yo sobre el fútbol en Estados Unidos?
¿Cómo estaba el clima?

It happened in the past… so why are we saying ME GUSTA? 👀

Because the event is over, but your feeling about it exists NOW.

Me gusta que haya hecho sol ayer.
Me alegra que hayas venido.
Me gusta que hayamos tenido tiempo para hablar.

This is where Spanish gets interesting: the time of the event and the time of your emotion don’t always have to match.

Now let’s put EVERYTHING in the past. ⏳

When the event happened in the past AND your reaction belongs to that past moment, you can use:

Me gustó que + imperfect subjunctive.

“Me gustó que hubiera sol el verano pasado.”

Now think about a past experience: a trip, a celebration, a concert, a vacation, even something that happened last weekend.

Complete ONE:

Me gustó que…
Me encantó que…
Me sorprendió que…
Me molestó que…

If the time period you’re talking about is still happening, this is a structure you’ll want to know:

Me ha gustado que + subjuntivo.

For example:
“Me ha gustado que haga calor todos los días este verano.”

Now make it about YOUR life.

¿Qué te ha gustado de este verano?
¿Qué te ha gustado de tu ciudad últimamente?
¿Qué te ha gustado de aprender español?
