Now showing at the Burien Community Center: Audrey Brandt

Step into the whimsical world of artist Audrey Brandt, whose playful acrylic paintings celebrate joy, humor, and a deep love of animals.

In Audrey’s words “I am an artist who has consistently been working in acrylics, watercolor, or pencil for most of my life. In this particular series of paintings, I wanted to convey joy, humor, and my love of the natural world. I love animals! They're on my mind most days. One could say it's a hyper fixation. In these paintings, you will see a merry band of some of my favorite animals. They're anthropomorphized and enjoying some of their favorite snacks. These paintings took a year of my life to complete and are all acrylic paint. Another one of my goals with these paintings was to make each an object d'art. This is why I painted the sides in a motif carried from the art itself. It's contained like an item in a shadow box, or an altar.
When you look at these paintings, I hope they make you happy. I hope you get a craving for your favorite snack or a boba tea. Maybe you'll want to watch a nature documentary or give your furry friend at home. A hug.”

Grace’s exhibit will be featured until the end of September 2025. In the artist’s words “Each of my pieces begins with a place—a specific location experienced on a specific day. I forage natural elements from that landscape, aiming to create a visual representation of that moment in time. My process is grounded in natural rhythm: I wait until nightfall to begin scanning, tying my creative flow to the movement of the sun and the turning of the seasons. Scanning in the dark creates vivid color and a consistent black background, while allowing me to linger in the energy of the day just passed.”

The 2026 Burien Gallery Program Call For Artists is currently open for applications! Have you applied yet?

The City of Burien welcomes artists residing in Washington State to apply to exhibit their work in one of three spaces located in Burien, including the Burien Community Center (BCC), The Maverick Apartments, or Merrill Garden Senior Living.
There is a $250 artist stipend for The Maverick and Merrill Gardens, and a $50 artist stipend for BCC.

Our next Empty Bowls event is scheduled for Friday, January 30, 2026.

BURIEN EMPTY BOWLS HISTORY:
Empty Bowls began in 1990 as an art class project in a Michigan high school to raise funds for a food drive. Students made ceramic bowls, served a meal of soup and bread, and invited guests to keep the bowl as a reminder of hunger in the world.

By the following year, the organizers had developed this idea into the Empty Bowls Project and established the imagine | RENDER Group, a 501(c)3 organization designed to promote the concept. Since its inception, this simple project has evolved into a far-reaching program providing support for food banks, soup kitchens, and other organizations that fight hunger. Empty Bowls events have been held throughout the world, raising millions of dollars for use in combating hunger.
