Board Certified Music Therapist Cayla Mendoza shares, "Intentional playlisting is the process of grouping together musical selections with the purpose of supporting or shifting toward a desired mood. I have found intentional playlisting to be a widely accessible and meaningful therapeutic tool."
When we create playlists with attention to how we feel, we can facilitate a positive change in our mood, energy, and emotional state in a way that's tailored to who we are. Cayla shares, "Because each individual’s experiences, memories, and emotional associations with music are unique, intentional playlisting can become a highly personal and meaningful way to support emotional awareness and regulation."

"It makes me feel so touched that my culture would be celebrated in a place that's so far from my home, that the kids are enjoying it." shares Music Teacher Intern Yan, who, along with Music Teacher Lesley Baird, led ETM-LA student orff ensembles in a performance of The Battle of the Elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, compromising of four unique movements representing each element. "Fire" featured the student's interpretation of a traditional Chinese Dragon Dance 🐲🎶
Bringing diverse cultural experiences to students through music is an essential part of building a quality music education curriculum, and we're proud to continue fostering empathy, connection & curiosity through culturally responsive teaching year-round ❤️

"School can be kind of stressful, but [music class] has made my anxiety better; I had like 4 F’s, now they're straight A’s. If there is something you can do with music, do it. It helps a lot with your mental health and whatever [you’re] going through." -ETM-LA Student
