📣Endorsement Alert 📣

We are excited to announce the following endorsements for Burbank City Council: Nikki Perez, Tamala Takahashi, and Mike Van Gorder. Our endorsement process can be lengthy, but working educators also lead it at every level, from interviews to the final vote of our Representative Council, composed of educators from every school in the district.

Educators believe Nikki, Tamala, and Mike are the best choice for the City of Burbank. Each of them supports key issues for educators, including working to increase school funding at the local and statewide level, protecting Burbank students and families from aggressive federal immigration enforcement, and supporting every worker's right to a union and a fair contract. They also bring strong qualifications and a viable path to victory in November.

The Burbank Teachers Association is proud to endorse George Saikali for the BUSD Board of Education, Trustee Area 4.

Our Endorsement Team, Executive Board, and Representative Council, all working educators selected by their peers, chose George after a thorough application and interview process.

George brings decades of experience in youth development from his work as president and CEO of the Glendale YMCA. He led the YMCA to financial success while strengthening youth programs and putting community first. A public servant through and through, George will bring his community-focused vision to the school board and will work with educators, parents, and the community to fight for the schools that our students deserve.

As the only candidate in his trustee area, George will be appointed to the school board without appearing on your ballots this electoral season. We look forward to seeing his contribution to our school board moving forward.

The Burbank Teachers Association is proud to endorse Rosemary T. Morrison for the BUSD Board of Education, Trustee Area 3.

Our Endorsement Team, Executive Board, and Representative Council, all working educators selected by their peers, chose Rosemary after a thorough application and interview process.

Rosemary has worked in education for more than 20 years. She has been a parent, a teacher, and a classified employee, and she'll bring all of that experience to the school board.

Educators trust Rosemary to hold BUSD leadership accountable to the needs of our schools.

Rosemary will also work with families, staff, and the whole community to:
- Build strong basics in reading, math, and science
- Grow literacy and reading programs for students who are struggling
- Recruit and retain great educators in Burbank schools

BTA kicked off the school year with the first rep council, our Fall Leadership Training. Reps were given tools to help throughout their tenure as they organize with other members.

It took a few days for us to post this because we were putting the finishing touches on classrooms and lesson plans, but thank you Burbank Council PTA for inviting us to the Welcome Back Fair!

Endorsement Process Update: After significant deliberation, our executive board, composed of educators from across the district, has decided to open an additional window for endorsement applications for the BUSD Board of Education. Our endorsement will be one of the most significant decisions we make this year, and who serves on the Board of Education over the next four years will have a major impact on students, educators, and our community. The interview process thus far has been a great opportunity to engage with passionate candidates about their vision for Burbank schools; however, since beginning interviews, it has become clear that additional candidates have entered the race. Our leaders and members want to make this decision with as much information as possible, especially in such a critical moment for Burbank schools. If you are running for the BUSD Board of Education, are interested in BTA's endorsement, and have not yet applied for endorsement, apply now! Interviews will be conducted between August 12th and August 16th, and the final endorsement vote will still take place at our August 19th Representative Council. BTA members just ratified our latest tentative agreement! Here are three things we won:

1) Strong protections for immigrant students and educators!

2) Continued progress on workload relief for elementary special education.

3) Equalizing of summer school pay for educators, resulting a 25% increase in summer school pay for many educators.
