West Coast Swing was never meant to stand still.

Born from the evolution of swing in California, West Coast Swing has spent decades changing, adapting and finding new dancers around the world.

West Coast Swing has roots in Lindy Hop and the swing traditions that evolved in California, eventually becoming the distinct, smooth, improvisational dance we know today.

From California to the world.

Today, West Coast Swing is a truly global dance — shaped by different cultures, musical influences, dancers and generations.

And its evolution isn’t slowing down.

This is actually a really nice place to establish the “where it’s going” idea. The World Swing Dance Council itself describes swing as having grown tremendously and now being danced throughout the world.

So what happens when you put the best dancers in the world in the bush?

Safari Swing brings some of the most respected names in West Coast Swing together in an intimate setting — including Jordan Frisbee & Tatiana Mollmann, Jakub Jakoubek & Emeline Rochefeuille, Robert Royston and Mia Pastor.

You don’t just watch the champions.

You dance with them.

Safari Swing’s classes are deliberately intimate, with the majority having fewer than 15 couples, giving guests an unusual level of interaction with their teachers.

There are few places where you can leave a massage, walk to the window, and find a herd of elephants just beyond the fence.

At The Shepherd’s Tree, the wild is never far away.

One moment our dancers were relaxing at the lodge. The next, they were running to the balcony to watch a herd gathering at the water.

And that is what makes Safari Swing so special — the opportunity to experience the beauty of South African nature while surrounded by the comfort and luxury of the lodge.

Elephants are extraordinary creatures — their trunks hold up to 40,000 muscles, they communicate through infrasonic calls humans can’t hear, their herds are led by the wisest matriarch, pregnancies last a remarkable 22 months, and their feeding habits actively shape the savanna for other species.

They’re even one of the few animals that can stand their ground against lions, defending their young by forming a united wall of strength.

Our lion may be the mascot.

But out here, the elephants have a presence of their own.

Hi, I’m Jamie - event director for Safari Swing.

I still remember my first safari: South Africa’s wildlife up close, creatures I’d only ever seen in books or on TV, suddenly standing right there in front of me. That feeling never really leaves you.

That’s the heart of Safari Swing - sharing something I’m deeply passionate about with a community I love being part of.

It’s a celebration of the best of South Africa: world-class luxury, unforgettable hospitality, and dance lessons from the world’s leading West Coast Swing professionals.

Honestly, the part I can’t wait for? Watching people step out on their first-ever game drive and seeing them feel exactly how I felt all those years ago.
