Can you believe that we are halfway through the high school football season?

As the “first season” closes and the “second season” – district play – opens, there has been a lot of good action in Central Louisiana thus far.

Look no further than the Top Ten this week as an indicator to the good play in the area.

Jena’s loss to Tioga opens the door at No. 2, while the Gafford’s 11th returns after a week-long hiatus.

So, without further ado…

(By the way, we have our graphics again!)

1. ASH (4-1, LW: 1): After a loss to Neville in Week 4, the Trojans blasted Liberty in their tune-up game prior to District 2-5A play. ASH’s senior members of the secondary – Jakyrin Griffin (two interceptions) and Letravious Williams (eight tackles) – stood out to help it make quick work of the Patriots. The Trojans are back home at The Butch this week to host West Monroe.

2. Marksville (5-0, LW: 3): Is there anyone lighting up the field more than Tulane commitment Devin “Bam” Lavalais right now? Against Pineville, Lavalais accounted for eight touchdowns and broke the Tiger record for touchdowns scored – previously held by 2016 All-Cenla MVP and Tiger great Qa Mingo. Marksville has its sights on the District 2-3A title and gets the defending district champions Jena at home this week.

3. Leesville (4-1, LW: 4): What a difference a year makes over in Wampus Cat land. Leesville is sitting at 4-1 after its dominating win at Many, while Grant Braxton added his second 300-yard effort in three weeks after going for 318 yards. It is a short week for Leesville as it hosts Rayne Thursday.

4. Tioga (4-1, LW: 5): Jena has had just eight losses over the last two-and-a-half years and the Indians are responsible for three of those defeats. Tioga’s backfield duo of Bryson Faul and Jackson Tarver combined to go for 382 yards and five touchdowns as the Tribe upset the Prep Classic finalists from last year. Tioga hosts West Ouachita this week as District 2-4A play opens.

5. Jena (3-2, LW: 2): Putting Jena at No. 5 feels blasphemous, but that is the razor thin difference between Nos. 2 and 5, especially after Jena lost to a Tioga team that lost to Leesville in Week 3. The Giants will look to take down Marksville in a matchup of Division III non-select’s top teams.

6. St. Mary’s (5-0, LW: 6): The Tigers were held to under 250 yards for the second straight week but managed to stay undefeated with their 23-14 win at Winnfield. Freshman Weston Legrande made a team-high 12 tackles to pace the defense as St. Mary’s shut out Winnfield in the second half. The Tigers open District 3-1A play this week at home against Logansport in what could go a long way in determining the district.

7. Bunkie (3-2, LW: 7): Another week of Ketron Watson rushing for over 200 yards leads to another win for the Panthers. Watson went off for 222 yards and four touchdowns against Kinder last week to hold the Cenla rushing lead through five games. Matter of fact, his 752 yards in the last three weeks would rank EIGHTH in the regular season totem pole. Bunkie looks for its fourth straight win this week against Ouachita Christian.

8. Rosepine (5-0, LW: 9): Before this season, the Eagles won five games in the last three seasons combined. Now, they have their first 5-0 start since 2018 after a 59-12 win over Delhi. Rosepine got another impressive performance by Brynnum Chaney, who accounted for 349 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns. After a two-year hiatus, the Battle for the Big Dog Jug is back as the Eagles host Pickering.

9. Winnfield (3-2, LW: 8): The Tigers have come down to earth some over the last two weeks, but that was to be expected against Jena and St. Mary’s – teams ranked Nos. 5 and 6 on this list. The Tigers are still in a good spot heading into District 4-2A play when they
travel Friday to Red River, who upset Logansport last week.

10. Caldwell Parish (4-1, LW: 10): You control the line of scrimmage, you usually win the game. Simple as that. The Spartans did just that in their 48-21 win over St. Frederick and are now 4-1 for the first time since 2019. Caldwell rushed for 282 yards, went 5-for-6 on fourth downs and possessed the ball for 34 minutes – all key ingredients for a win. This week, the Spartans host Union Parish, which has played much better than its 0-5 record suggests.

Gafford’s 11th: Vidalia (4-1, LW: NR): The Gafford’s 11th spot is back open for business as the Vikings take over as winners of four straight. The strength of victory may leave a little to be desired, but Vidalia has a hard-fought loss to St. Mary’s on its resume and that loss looks better each week with the Tigers sitting at 5-0. The Vikings host Mangham to open district as they look to continue their good run.
