Cougar for life, Mr. Jessie Kibbles! Buna Independent School District

🏈LAMAR HALL OF HONOR LEGEND: THE STORY OF TWO-SPORT STAR JESSIE KIBBLES🏃🏾

Before he was changing lives in the classroom, Jesse Kibbles was making history on the track and football field.

The Buna High School graduate set two Texas state track and field records before earning a football scholarship to Lamar University, where he became one of the most accomplished student-athletes in school history. A two-sport standout, Kibbles won the 800-meter title at the 1980 Southland Conference Championships in a time of 1:52.46, earned All-America honors by anchoring Lamar's 1,600-meter relay team to an eighth-place finish at the 1979 NCAA Championships, and helped set a school record in the distance medley relay at the prestigious Texas Relays.

But Kibbles wasn't just a track star.

He was also a four-year letterman in football as a defensive back for the Cardinals. During his career, he recorded two interceptions, blocked a punt, and delivered a memorable performance against UT Arlington in 1975, racking up 11 tackles in a single game.

His achievements in both sports earned him a place in the Lamar University Cardinal Hall of Honor in 1998.

After earning his master's degree in education, Kibbles devoted decades to serving Southeast Texas students as a teacher, principal, and administrator in Beaumont ISD. Near the end of that distinguished career, he accepted a position that brought him full circle with law enforcement and youth mentorship. As Beaumont's Director of Alternative Education Programs, he went to the county jail every day, teaching incarcerated teenagers and helping them find a path forward.

Today, Kibbles continues that mission as director of the Alternative Education Program at Buna Junior High School.

From setting records and earning All-America honors to guiding young people through some of life's toughest challenges, Jesse Kibbles' legacy is about far more than athletic success. It's about using every opportunity to make a difference.

Lady Cougars!! 🏐💙

What a day it has been!

We started off at 9:00 AM beating Hemphill in 3, and took two tough losses to Warren and Onalaska earning 4th in the Gold Bracket!

Congratulations to Maddy Merkelz and Alyssa Stanley on receiving All-Tournament!

Our girls hustled hard today and will be back in action on Tuesday as we travel to Hamshire Fannett!

Devers ISD tops in Region 5 for 2026! Most improved Buna ISD by a good margin. Lumberton ISD next. Bob Hope and Evadale earn difficult TEA district distinctions to give the region two more than last year (with Nederland ISD which repeated the accomplishment in 2026!).
