AQUARIUS, EDGEWATER, CONTINUE TRADITION OF
THANKSGIVING MEALS FOR AREA’S HOMELESS STUDENTS

Dozens of students and their families in the Bullhead City and Colorado River Union High School Districts will again have traditional Thanksgiving meals, following donations by the Aquarius and Edgewater Casino Resorts in Laughlin, Hope United Methodist Church in Bullhead City, the Bullhead City Lions Club and an anonymous benefactor.

Eighty four turkey meals with trimmings from side dishes to dessert were provided by Golden Entertainment’s Aquarius/Edgewater “Feed A Family” program. BCSD received 40 “Feed A Family” meals, plus ten from Hope UMC, six from the Lions Club and another ten from an anonymous donor. CRUHSD received 44 “Feed A Family” meals and ten from Hope UMC.

Now in its twelfth year, “Feed A Family” is a collaborative effort of Aquarius and Edgewater players donating their Golden Entertainment True Rewards points, employees, and community contributions.

“Aquarius and Edgewater Casino Resorts are happy to support the children of the Bullhead City School District who are in need, and thankful for the community support team who help get these meals to the families,” said Jeremy Jenson, senior vice president and general manager of the Aquarius and Edgewater Casino Resorts.

Student homelessness can have many causes: a parent losing a job, domestic abuse, blended family tensions, children thrown out of the house because of sexual orientation, financial crises and other factors. Some families are sharing homes with relatives; others are in temporary housing, while others are living in vehicles or on the streets.

Student homelessness is defined under the federal McKinney–Vento Homeless Assistance Act of 1987, enacted by Congress and signed by Pres. Ronald Reagan. At any given time, 50 to 200 students can be homeless between BCSD and CRUHSD, as many families have children enrolled in both districts.

“Feed a Family” is assisting more than one dozen non-profit and charitable programs, food banks and organizations this fall with hundreds of meals. It will have a similar outreach for Christmas meals.

BCSD continues to accept cash donations for additional meals for homeless students, plus new and gently used clothing, both during the holidays and for ongoing needs. Additional information is available from BCSD parent liaison Sheree Norris at 928-758-3961, x-1026.

AREA SUPERINTENDENTS REMIND DRIVERS, PARENTS,
OF SCHOOL BUS SAFETY AS PUBLIC SCHOOLS START

Three area public school superintendents have banded together to remind drivers that school buses will again be picking up and dropping off students, as the 2023-2024 school year gets under way. In addition to buses, students will also be walking or riding bicycles to and from school, and sometimes crossing the street to and from bus stops.

Bullhead City School District #15 (BCSD) and Mohave Valley Elementary School District #16 (MVESD) start classes on July 31. Colorado River Union High School District (CRUHSD) begins its new school year on August 2.

“When a school bus is displaying its red flashing lights and stop sign, traffic stops in both directions, unless it’s a divided highway,” Superintendents Carolyn Stewart (BCSD), Cole Young (MVESD) and Tim Richard (CRUHSD) said in a joint statement. “Under Arizona state law, school bus drivers are empowered to report those violators to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.”

The superintendents also noted that when buses are stopped, there’s a good chance that students are nearby. Not all students will pay attention to oncoming traffic, so drivers of other vehicles should always be alert and yield to pedestrians, even if the pedestrians don’t have the right of way.

All three districts have had school buses damaged in accidents caused by other careless drivers in private vehicles. Buses have been t-boned, hit head-on, sideswiped and even flipped on their sides.

In addition to BCSD, CRUHSD and MVESD, other area public schools will start school in August, with the same school bus safety tips. Clark County School District (Bennett Elementary and Laughlin Junior-Senior High Schools) returns August 7, along with the Needles Unified School District on August 16. Topock Elementary School District #12 rounds out the area’s public schools, starting on August 24.

The Bullhead City Police Department is searching for 15-year-old Yazmin Juarez.

She was last seen attending Mohave High School today. Police have been told that she possibly had plans to go to Rotary Park after school, but never returned home. Her family is very concerned for her welfare.

She was last seen wearing a blue CRUHSD Academy sweatshirt, light blue jeans, and black vans. She is about 5’2”, 135 pounds with brown eyes and long straight brown hair with a nose piercing.
