Teachers, We Don't Have to Be Martyrs (Opinion) "Teachers need not be martyrs to transform the lives of their students. Valuing ourselves doesn’t mean we love kids any less," writes Natashia Hill.

Dear Wakapa Students, Parents, and Supporters:

I trust this message greets you at the peak of wellness and strength. I am reaching out today to communicate a significant shift in my career trajectory, the culmination of months of deep contemplation and introspection, and with a bittersweet amalgamation of emotions, I have resolved to relinquish my role as the principal of Wakapa Academy and bid farewell to the career field of public education.

The decision I am sharing with you today was reached after painstaking deliberation. I am aware of your keen interest in understanding the reasons that precipitated my departure. At the crux of the matter, the labyrinth of impending unnecessary challenges and barriers has ended up insurmountable. I realized that the challenges and problems our school faces cannot be fixed with how things are in the District right now. I tried to work with the District, but we could not find an agreeable solution. Over the past two years, numerous requests for additional personnel and career-technical-education resources were made to the District; however, the District continued to reject the requests needed to serve the students. As a result, the staff and I have reached burnout, a concern the Accreditation Evaluator expressed earlier this year. Furthermore, within the past week, I have learned the District may be contemplating closing the Academy for the upcoming school year, something we were previously told would not happen. If this is now the plan then this may explain the District's failure to provide the resources needed to serve our students. As I conveyed to the District, the circumstances showed little-to-no prospects of improvement for our dedicated staff or our hardworking students; therefore, there was no other option but to resign.

Throughout the years, I have been granted the singular honor of guiding underprivileged students to alter the course of their lives, an endeavor that found its zenith in my last two years at Wakapa Academy. I am humbled by the privilege to have nurtured so many bright young minds and worked in synergy with Mr. Smith and Mrs. Miller, two educators whose commitment and fervor for education know no bounds. The part I played in your children's educational odyssey is an honor I will forever cherish. Every day was a new tapestry woven with challenges and triumphs, and it was my honor to share these threads of experiences with both you and your children. The rich tapestry of our shared journey will forever occupy a treasured nook in my heart.

I must inform you Mr. Smith and Mrs. Miller will also be charting new career paths. Mr. Smith, motivated by reasons akin to my own, will be starting a new journey as Canyon Ridge High

School's science teacher next month. Mrs. Miller, meanwhile, has chosen to impart her knowledge of English at Buhl Middle School. Mrs. Reaman will also be moving on to Buhl High School.

Regarding my future endeavors, I have accepted a position with the U.S. Department of Defense to oversee the operations at the Grand Forks Air Force Base's Youth Development Center in North Dakota. For those in my classes this winter, this base is notable because it's one of the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile bases China used their reconnaissance balloon to fly over this past winter.

Allow me to convey my deepest gratitude to each of you for your unwavering support and understanding over the past two years. As I embark on a new chapter in my life, I want to underscore my profound appreciation for the precious moments I spent at Wakapa Academy. The institution was more than my workplace; it was a calling. Thank you for granting me the opportunity to serve you and for being an integral part of my journey in education. I eagerly anticipate the future accomplishments of Wakapa's students. Students, should you need a letter of recommendation, a listening ear, or sage advice, my door remains ever open to you. Lastly, students remember: Get off the escalator and Rise Above!

This was our first year implementing mastery based instruction and grading. This has been a tremendous change in practice at WA. The staff and students has done a fabulous job with this concept.
