We’re thrilled to congratulate Martha Baker and Kianna Small on their well-deserved promotions!
Martha has transitioned from the front desk to her own office and has stepped into the role of Executive Assistant. While her responsibilities may have changed, you’ll still see her warm smile and friendly face around the office!
Kianna has taken on the position of Social Media Manager and has also assumed Martha’s former role at the front desk. Her creativity and enthusiasm make her a great fit for this expanded role.
We couldn’t be more excited to see both Martha and Kianna grow within CMS, and we look forward to all they'll accomplish in their new positions.
Congrats to you both, and thank you for all you do to support CMS and its mission of welcoming all who wish to study music!

Today, Community Music School is closed in honor of Juneteenth - celebrating the inspiring and enduring legacies of Black artists that have helped inspire generations of music across all genres.
Nina Simone - A transcendent jazz artist from the 1950s - 1960s and prominent Civil Rights activist. Blending various music styles of jazz, pop, gospel, and folk music, Nina’s music tackled the oppressions of systemic inequality making her a major voice of
the Civil Rights Movement.
(February 21, 1933 - April 21, 2003)
Sam Cooke - AKA the “King of Soul” due to his legendary blends of gospel, pop, and rock music. Recognized as a gifted vocalist and Civil Rights activist, Sam wrote and recorded “A Change Is Gonna Come” in 1964 - a profound Civil Rights anthem that was inspired by Sam’s experiences of racial segregation.
(January 22, 1931 - December 11, 1964)
James Brown - Singer, dancer, musician, songwriter, and record producer who played a vital role in the growth of funk music - calling him the “Godfather of Soul” James Brown was another Civil Rights activist in the 1960s speaking up against racism throughout his musical career and wrote countless hit songs focusing on Black pride during such troubling times. His music influenced music to come by Bruce Springsteen, Prince, and Sting.
(May 3, 1933 - December 25, 2006)
As a music community, we recognize the profound influence of Black musicians, educators, composers, and creators whose voices have enriched every genre and helped move our culture forward. May we continue to learn and use music as a bridge that brings people together.
Happy Juneteenth from CMS 💚

We were less than ten blocks away, welcoming our students in for our annual skills showcase, when this brutal, racially motivated attack occurred. Our music school community, alongside our East Side and the whole Buffalo community, were forever changed that day.
We pledge to continue to lift up the voices of black and brown members of our student body, families, faculty and community, and stand as firm allies of justice, equity and equality - just as we have for over 100 years.
We remember the victims and their families today and every day. May their memory forever be a blessing.
