Career Development – Emergency Medical Services (EMS) | NAEMSP 10/09/2023

We at CHaMP regret to share that E. Brooke Lerner, PhD, FAEMS has passed away, ending her battle with cancer. She will be missed by so many, and has left behind an inspiring legacy.

Please consider donating to the E. Brooke Lerner Research Fund Grant (link below) in her honor.

Over the past 10 years, Dr. Lerner’s contributions to PECARN have made pediatric emergency medical services (EMS) research in PECARN flourish through her ground-breaking leadership of the Charlotte, Houston, and Milwaukee Prehospital (CHaMP) research node, her phenomenal impact serving on the PECARN Executive Committee, and her dedicated mentorship of numerous EMS investigators. Because of her work, we now have a formidable national network poised to fill critical knowledge gaps in pediatric EMS care.

Beyond PECARN, Dr. Lerner’s leadership and lifelong accomplishments in research, advocacy and mentorship have helped to shape the national science, practice and vision of EMS. Dr. Lerner began her career in EMS as a field paramedic, and the gaps in evidence that she observed over 5 years in that role prompted her to pursue further education to earn both Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Epidemiology.

She had over 20 years of experience in EMS research, and her academic career spanned contributions at the University of Rochester, Medical College of Wisconsin, and the University at Buffalo, where she was a Professor of Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Lerner’s most meaningful contributions to the science of EMS were in the realm of acute injury of children.

She authored over 135 peer-reviewed publications and received numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health to study how mechanisms of injury inform the triage of severely injured children. As a result of this body of work, she led the development of a national guideline for mass casualty triage. Her research contributed to the underpinnings of current trauma triage practices for both adults and children.

Dr. Lerner served on the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) Board of Directors, and she was an Associate Editor for the journal Prehospital Emergency Care. Her career-long contributions to the community and field of EMS have been previously recognized by NAEMSP with the 2013 Keith Neely Award and the 2023 Ronald D. Stewart Award.

Lastly, Dr. Lerner was an inspiring mentor. She is known not just for her influential advice but her supportive, personable style. She was instrumental in shaping our future generation of EMS researchers, ensuring that we have a pipeline of knowledge generators for the next decades.

NAEMSP, in partnership with the GMR Foundation for Research and Education, created a the E. Brooke Lerner Research fund to realize Dr. Lerner’s vision and honor her commitment to promote the growth of early career researchers in EMS (link below).
