Since 1896 AC electricity has flowed from Niagara Falls to North Tonawanda to Buffalo through the genius of Nikola Tesla. In appreciation of his numerous contributions to our civilization, the Nikola Tesla Legacy Corridor has been established. More about Tesla in Buffalo-Niagara: He imagined his AC turbines as a young man in Europe, then came to the U.S. When Edison refused to believe in AC power'

s possibility, Tesla opened his own lab, and eventually partnered with George Westinghouse. Westinghouse won the contract to light the 1893 World Colombian Exposition at Chicago. Capturing the attention of the businessmen bankrolling the event, Westinghouse went on to win the contract to build an AC power station at Niagara Falls. Nikola Tesla was the key and finally had the chance to construct his long-imagined turbines and transformers that transmitted AC power long-distance for the first time in the world. The copper lines sent power 26 miles from the Falls, through North Tonawanda to Buffalo, powering the electric streetcar system on November 15, 1896. Thus Tesla realized his lifelong dream, coinciding with the pinnacle of Victorian imagination in Buffalo; the first “Electric City”: The Pan-American Exposition. The 1901 event was inspired in part by these events, with its “City of Light” theme. Tesla also invented key aspects of radio, remote control, radar, wireless communication and x-ray imaging, but having signed over the rights to his AC power related patents with Westinghouse, he died penniless at the New Yorker Hotel in 1943 and was forgotten by many.

It has been 129 years since the world was changed by a monumental event that occurred right here "in our own back yard." Through the brilliance of Nikola Tesla and the manufacturing of George Westinghouse, the world's first long-distance transmission of Alternating Current flowed from Niagara Falls to North Tonawanda to Buffalo, NY. The Buffalo Niagara Nikola Tesla Council has endeavored to educate the public by creating the Tesla Legacy Corridor as a Triptych Tribute of Acknowledgement and Appreciation to Nikola Tesla and through dynamic Lectures.
Recently, the Mayor of the City of North Tonawanda, Austin Tylec, offered to name the road leading to our Tesla Coil art sculpture "Nikola Tesla Way." Here are a few photos.

Hello Friends! If you're looking for inspiration (and astonishment), devote your next 15 minutes to viewing the YOUTUBE video below. It was shown at Hotel Layayette on Saturday night in conjunction with the City of Buffalo designating September 14, 2024 as "Dr. Francis Lestingi Day" and the Italian Cultural Center of Buffalo, NY naming Dr. Lestingi its "Man of the Year" ... My friend is an amazing human and his accomplishments are testimony to his innate talents and abilities along with his intelligence, focus, and extraordinary work ethic. Congratulations Francis on your recent plaudits and your lifetime resume of success! 🌎

ATTENTION TEACHERS, EVENT ORGANIZERS, HISTORY BUFFS, ETC: Nikola Tesla was integral in the illumination of our planet by means of alternating current electricity. His crowning achievement occurred right here in Western New York in 1896 when electricity generated at Niagara Falls passed through North Tonawanda on to Buffalo, making Buffalo, NY the world’s first electric city.

If you or someone you know might be interested in scheduling a dynamic, visually enhanced lecture about the life and legacy of Nikola Tesla and his direct association with WNY, please peruse the information contained in the link below and contact us, the Buffalo Niagara Nikola Tesla Council, to schedule a complimentary program. We have presented dozens of lectures at museums, schools, historical societies and community centers since 2017. We are teachers who love to teach and Nikola Tesla is an amazing subject to explore. Please share this post with friends and colleagues interested in science, history and education.

Facebook is filled with "information" about Nikola Tesla be it accurate, hyperbolic, or outright false. What he did to change the world was done right here in Western New York. And here is what some of us did to show appreciation to him where it first happened.

Thank you Pete Gallivan at WGRZ-TV for this "Unknown Stories of Western New York" piece on the restoration and historical enhancements at the landmarked 1896 North Tonawanda transformer building. This well preserved building was a key link in the AC power system linking Niagara Falls and Buffalo developed by George Westinghouse using Nikola Tesla's patents.

The transformer house was a part of working to transmit electricity generated from Niagara Falls.

WESTERN NEW YORK is known for something more than Generational Snow Storms and Blizzards. It is the place where
Nikola Tesla’s spark that lit the entire world with long-distance Alternating Current was initially lit. In appreciation, fellow New Yorkers have created a Triptych Tribute to Nikola Tesla where it all first happened; where the modern electrified world first began here in WESTERN NEW YORK !
