Very PROUD of these young people!!!

Today, I expectantly had the pleasure to see this group of young people in the New
Science Building on campus going through the interview process. This component has been stressed over the many summers this program has been at Canisius College. Mrs. Elizabeth Caffee heads the program for more than five years. Mrs. Rhonda Hands assists her as a contact person with guidance counselors at various high schools in the Buffalo School District.

Today, the group had exposure to what is expected of them when having to interview for a college acceptance possibility, or an after school job, or even a scholarship opportunity. There are some students who have been groomed over the years and found this process one that they had mastered. There are also students new to the program this summer who found the experience to be somewhat challenging as this type of interfacing is not necessarily stressed during the normal academic year in Buffalo Schools. Lunch was to be served at completion of the presentation.

This summer, the Academic Talent Search "Earn While You Learn" program took a different direction. The students participated in acquiring golf skills two days a week at the Paddock Golf Center in Tonawanda and the they spent two days at the community garden at Zion Dominion Church as they did last summer.

These students are having the opportunity to become global citizens by developing skills that will help them advance in the corporate world and also, they are learning how to help themselves and others less fortunate to survive in this world by growing their own food. The session began July 7th and will be ending August 15th. We look forward to working with some of these students during the 2014-2015 school year.

Photos were taken by one of our Senior Mentors, Kameron Wood, a junior at Purchase College, Purchase, NY. Hopefully, he will share some of the many photos taken this summer with this site. All and all, we are VERY PROUD of all of these young people who are destined to make a difference in this world.

Annual Fall College Fair (Part 2) 09/20/2012

Morethan 50 students were in attendance at the College Fair given by Academic Talent Search. More than 25 colleges sent representatives to speak with interested students having a desire to applying or considering to apply to colleges. After three hours of interacting, everyone was ready for lunch. Students had the experience of dining in the the Canisius College dining hall using their $7 meal voucher to order an entree with choice of sides or sandwich, side, and a beverage. These young people were mannerable, polite, and considerate of other patrons in the dining hall. This group demonstrated a serious commitment to their career goals. Some had more definite plans than others and most seemed receptive to learning to make a good impression during an interview. Hopefully, ATS will sponsor a winter, early spring college fair for future 9th-11th pondering the next level ni their academic journey to complete a trade certificate and/or a college degree.

Annual Fall College Fair (Part 1) 09/20/2012

Academic Talent Search held its annual fall college fair on Wednesday at the Main Street Campus. College Reps used the Regis South Conference Room on the second floor of the Student Life Building located on Hughes Avenue in close proximity to the Old Main Building. Interested students from our target high school campuses including City Honors, BAVPA (Buffalo Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts), Bennett, MST (Math, Science, & Technology Prepartory School), McKinley, and BASCS (Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School) attended to get information related to colleges being considered for future enrollment. Many seniors were present and asking thoughtful question. Their underclassmen counterparts were getting needed information for themselves and parents. Ms Michelle Rizzo from the Canisius Financial Aid office was present all morning to answer student questions related to cost, federal, state, and local aid, and procedure for application. Mrs. Caffee, Director of Talent Search, discussed the assets of this program with Ms Gillison , a guidance counselor from BASCS who brought her 20 sophomores and juniors to get information.

BASCS-(Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School 09/17/2012

Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School is also one of the schools Academic Talent Search at Canisius College services. One of our students, Jason Edwards, is a Student Ambassador for our program and represented his school quite well in this summer's "Earn While You Learn" enrichment program. Mrs. Rhonda Hands is the Counselor for this school. Today, she, Mr. Houston and Mr. Hill met with Amy Magney, Guidance Counselor, to work out a schedule that will benefit the students in grades 9-12. Educational Specialists, Mr.Ken Houston and Mr. Don Hill are responsible for Communication and Interview Skills and SAT prep (Vocabulary)/ Writing Skills, respectively. We want to make sure students at this school are better prepared for undertaking the SAT tests given throughout the school year. We met other students from the summer program and encouraged them to participate in the College Fair to be held this Wednesday. Once the student schedule is worked out between Ms Magney and Ms Gillison, we can begin instruction with these deserving students.

Return to MST (Math, Science, & Technology) 09/17/2012

On Monday, we returned to MST (Math< Science, & Technology) to meet the Parent Representative, Mr. Charles Everhardt, who is willing to be a part of the Parent Advisory Board for Academic Talent Search this year. This school seems to have strong parent invovlvement which will be an asset in student increased academic performance and social behavior. Students from our summer program greeted us and are eager to continue the positive learning experience they enjoyed this passed summer. Mr. Houston and Mr. Hill, Educational Specialists, are eager to begin the enrichment process at this location.
