An update from our alumna, Sophie McGuire (BA 2022):

After graduating, I first spent time working as an intern at Cortland Repertory Theatre in their costumes department and soon after moving to Japan for 6 months to attend Waseda University's Center for Japanese Language. During my time at Waseda, not only did I attend weekly classes but I got the opportunity to be the costume designer for a local theatre production called 兎王 (Tou).

4 years post graduation, I have returned to Japan where I am studying at a Japanese Language school to improve my Japanese skills while searching for theatre opportunities and connections. Through hard work and taking one step at a time, I hope to one day reach my goal of working full time in the theatre industry in Japan.

To current and graduated Asian Studies Program students:
Keep pushing and working hard! Keep working towards your goals and you'll be successful wherever you go.
- Sophie

For those with Filipino ancestry: Check out the YouLeaD Summer Program!

Youth Leaders in the Diaspora (YouLeaD) is a two-week cultural immersion program in the Philippines intended for Filipino youth who were born abroad or migrated at an early age, such that they are not very familiar with the Philippines.

The program seeks to help participants answer long standing questions about themselves and their identities as half- or part-Filipinos that they may have had growing up. Joining the program would aid them in the journey of understanding a significant part of their identities, which would hopefully move them toward a more meaningful relationship with their Filipino families and the nation itself.
