Career Spotlight: Clean-Energy HVAC Technician ⚡

HVAC is no longer just furnaces, boilers, and AC units.

Tomorrow’s technicians will increasingly work with heat pumps, smart controls, energy-efficient systems, and connected buildings, combining hands-on mechanical skills with technology.

The opportunity is growing: BLS projects 8% job growth through 2034 and about 40,100 openings each year.

Right here in Buffalo, Northland’s new $4.2M Clean Tech Lab is expanding hands-on training for the building systems careers employers need.

For students, the takeaway is simple: learn the traditional skills—and understand where the technology is going.

Where are the career opportunities growing in Western New York?

Construction. IT. Healthcare. Skilled trades.

These fields may look very different, but they have something in common: they need people with the skills to build, care, solve problems, and adapt.

In March 2026, Western New York had 647,200 nonfarm jobs, with private education and health services making up the region's largest industry sector. Construction also recorded year-over-year job growth.

And the opportunities aren't limited to traditional career paths. Think nurses, computer support specialists, construction workers, electricians, plumbers, equipment operators, and more.

The important question isn't only, "What job do I want?"

It's also:

"What industries are growing and what skills will I need to be ready for them?"

At Be Your Own Hero, we help young people explore those possibilities before they have to make big career decisions.

Sometimes, knowing what's out there is the first step toward finding where you belong.

Think manufacturing means standing on an assembly line all day? Think again.

A CNC machinist/programmer works where computers, precision and advanced equipment meet. You may read blueprints, program machines, select tools, measure finished parts and troubleshoot when something doesn’t go as planned.

And Western New York needs these skills. Northland projects 20,000+ advanced-manufacturing openings by 2030, while WNY Works lists CNC machinist/programmer as a local career pathway, with NY wages ranging from $39,607–$62,571.

Great employees aren’t finished products.
The first week shouldn’t be about proving they know everything. It should be about creating a path to learn.
Deloitte’s 2026 Gen Z and Millennial Survey found that accelerated learning and career growth are among the top impacts young workers expect from AI.
For employers, that means development needs to be intentional:
🔹 Pair new talent with a mentor
🔹 Set 30/60/90 day skill goals
🔹 Give feedback early, not just at reviews
🔹 Let young employees own real projects
At BYOH, we help employers turn emerging talent into stronger contributors.

Before fall gets busy, give your career plans a reset.

You don’t need a perfect career plan. You need a clearer starting point.

Use August to:
👉Identify your strengths
👉Pick 3 industries worth exploring
👉Refresh your résumé + LinkedIn
👉Research 5 local employers
👉Name 1 skill you need to build
👉Make 1 real-world connection

That last step matters. Employers are increasingly using skills-based hiring—and want students to show how they’ve actually used their skills.

Save this checklist and complete it before classes start.

Ready to take the next step? Be Your Own Hero can help.

The first step is knowing what's possible.

At Be Your Own Hero, we help young people explore careers, discover their strengths, and see opportunities they may never have considered.

AI skills in entry-level jobs have nearly tripled since fall 2025.

That’s not a prediction about the future. It’s happening now.

NACE reports that more than one-third of entry-level jobs require AI skills, nearly triple the share reported six months earlier. And 28% of employers say they’re looking for early-career talent who can use AI at work.

But being “AI-ready” isn’t about letting AI think.

Students should practice using AI to research, test ideas, improve work, and solve problems, then verify and explain the result themselves.

Build AI skills. Keep human judgment.

The best apprenticeship opportunities may be open before a student is ready to graduate.

New York State’s current Western New York listings include opportunities with Electricians JAC Buffalo LU #41, Iron Workers Local 6 and the North Atlantic States Carpenters Training Fund.

That matters because apprenticeship recruitment isn’t something students should discover at graduation.

Start early:
🔹 Bookmark the NYS apprenticeship announcements page
🔹 Track opening and closing dates
🔹 Research requirements and application steps
🔹 Prepare for testing, interviews and documentation

A few months of preparation can make the difference between being ready and missing the window.

3,000+ skilled manufacturing jobs are open in Western New York.
And the average manufacturing worker is about 56 years old.
That’s more than a hiring problem.
It’s a generational workforce handoff.

Experienced workers are carrying decades of technical knowledge and employers need younger workers ready to learn, contribute and eventually take the reins.

For students, that means looking beyond the four-year degree as the only path. Manufacturing careers can offer hands-on work, technical skills, apprenticeships and long-term advancement.

The opportunity is here. Are we preparing the next generation to step into it?
