✨ Joyce Jekayinoluwa, who successfully completed her comprehensive exam through the Department of Gender and Sexuality Studies doctoral program at the University at Buffalo on 5/11.

✨ Vanity Jones, who successfully completed her comprehensive exam through the Department of Social Work and Social Welfare doctoral program on 5/14.

The impact of abuse often extends beyond physical harm and can affect emotional well-being, self-esteem, sleep, stress levels, relationships, and overall mental health long after the abuse occurs.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, BBRIDGE recognizes the importance of addressing both the visible and invisible impacts of trauma while reminding survivors that healing, support, and care are possible.

We’re looking forward to joining Trocaire College for an upcoming Faculty Senate Professional Development “Lunch & Learn.”

BBRIDGE members Jennifer Elliott, MSW, ABD and Ogechi Kalu, MSW, ABD will be presenting current research related to intimate partner violence (IPV), while also engaging faculty in conversations around trauma-informed and culturally responsive classroom discussions and assessment practices.

This conversation is especially important as educators continue navigating how to discuss trauma, violence, and identity in ways that are informed, supportive, and culturally responsive for students.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Trocaire College and continue bridging community, practice, and research through meaningful dialogue and education.

We’re proud to share a major milestone for BBRIDGE!

Our co-founder and BBRIDGE member, Oge, has been selected as the recipient of the Nochajski Essay Award at the University at Buffalo School of Social Work. This award recognizes an outstanding manuscript primarily authored by a UBSSW PhD student, and we are incredibly proud to see her work honored in this way.

Her winning manuscript, “Why Did You Stay after the First Time?” – A Vignette Investigation of Black Male Clergy Responses to Help-Seeking Among Black Women Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence, represents a powerful and necessary contribution to IPV research. This work critically examines how Black male clergy respond to survivors, shedding light on the cultural, relational, and systemic dynamics that shape help-seeking experiences.

This recognition also marks a historic moment for us as it becomes BBRIDGE’s first publication.

Oge’s dedication, thoughtfulness, and commitment to advancing culturally responsive IPV intervention continues to inspire the work we do. This is exactly what BBRIDGE was created for—bridging the gap between research, community, and practice.
