Caroline Attardo Genco, provost and senior vice president at Tufts University, has been named ’s 16th president, becoming the first woman and Buffalo native to lead the university. Her appointment was approved by the SUNY Board of Trustees Tuesday following an international search.

UB hosts national AI leaders this week 06/02/2026

This week, the University at Buffalo, Inside Higher Ed and Times Higher Education are bringing together leaders from higher education, industry and public policy for the U.S. AI Summit 2026, a national conversation focused on advancing trustworthy, responsible and equitable artificial intelligence.

Held on June 3-4, the conference will bring together thought leaders from academia, government and industry – including UB experts – to examine how AI is reshaping health care, education, sustainability and other critical sectors. Speakers will also discuss the cross-sector partnerships and practical strategies needed to advance trustworthy, responsible AI for social good.

UB hosts national AI leaders this week Conference is set to draw over 170 participants from universities and organizations nationwide and around the world, including UB experts.

Congratulations to University at Buffalo Department of English alumni Sara DiNatale and Juliana Spahr on earning 2026 Pulitzer Prizes! This is a remarkable achievement that reflects the power of a liberal arts education and the impact of storytelling across journalism and poetry. 🌟 ✍ 📖

DiNatale shares the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting with her colleagues at the San Francisco Chronicle for their series, “Burned,” while Spahr earned the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for her collection "Ars Poeticas."

UB to offer the world’s first doctorate in applied ontology 05/07/2026

Big news from the College of Arts and Sciences: The world’s first doctorate in applied ontology! A groundbreaking program at the intersection of philosophy, AI, data science and information systems.

Led by Barry Smith, SUNY Distinguished Professor, and John Beverley, assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy, the fully online doctoral program will prepare students to tackle some of the biggest challenges in artificial intelligence and knowledge engineering by helping systems understand and organize complex information.

From health care and biotech to finance, defense and e-commerce, applied ontologists are shaping the future of how humans and machines work with data, and UB continues to lead the way in this rapidly growing field.

UB to offer the world’s first doctorate in applied ontology The new PhD program, and a master’s launched last year, are the only graduate level applied ontology degrees in the world, filling a critical need in a burgeoning field.

The College was honored to celebrate the newest inductees into Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society last week. 🌟

The April 28 ceremony recognized nearly 100 outstanding students whose academic excellence, intellectual curiosity and commitment to the liberal arts and sciences set them apart.

Mark Seery, PhD, president of UB’s Phi Beta Kappa and professor in the Department of Psychology states, "This year’s class of inductees is made up of well-rounded thinkers who are well on their way into developing into life-long learners and impressive human beings. They meet the high expectations we have of the best and brightest students at UB."

After 33 years in the Department of Chemistry, Luis Colón, SUNY Distinguished Professor and A. Conger Goodyear Professor, is retiring this semester. His career is defined as much by the students he mentored as by the research he conducted.

From guiding more than 50 graduate students to expanding opportunities for underrepresented scholars, his impact will be felt for generations.
