A little Buffalo history for this Thursday

Ida Dora Fairbush was born in 1869, when Buffalo's public schools remained segregated. With sustained advocacy by the African American community, the district was formally desegregated in 1872. It would be another twenty-five years before the district hired Fairbush as its first African American teacher in 1897.

She was initially hired in 1895 as a substitute in what newspapers termed an "experiment." Ida taught at School 6 for the next forty years and gained distinction for excellence in teaching immigrant children.

EdCo celebrates Black History Month

01/29/2025

Chinese or Lunar New Year is also called Spring Festival as people welcome a time of planting and new beginnings. The 16 day long holiday is also celebrated in Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam and is a day for praying to the gods and to their ancestors. It is a time for families to be together, setting off a massive migration from the cities back to rural villages where elders live. Like Christmas and New Years here, the holiday is celebrated with fireworks, special food, gifts, lights in the form of lanterns, and many red decorations.

Today EdCo will be closed in honor of Martin Luther King Day.
