This fall, our “Where Do We Go From Here?” series continues with three Third Thursday intergenerational community conversations designed to bring our elders, adults, young people, families, leaders, and neighbors together.

The school day may end, but the learning, growth, and fun don’t have to!

The King Urban Life Center Afterschool Program provides a safe, supportive, and engaging space where young people can learn, grow, lead, and succeed. 💚

Students will have access to homework help, caring mentors, healthy snacks, and engaging enrichment activities including STEAM, games, fitness, leadership development, arts, and more!

Before we close out Black August, here’s some history from Brother Lion. ✊🏾

Black August is more than a moment on the calendar. It is an opportunity to remember the people, movements, rebellions, organizing, sacrifice, and resistance that have shaped the long struggle for Black liberation.

Brother Lion reminds us that Black August was formally established in 1979 to commemorate the lives and struggle of George and Jonathan Jackson and grew into a broader observance of Black resistance and liberation throughout history.

And August holds a lot of that history.

📅 August 1, 1834 — Emancipation took effect across much of the British Empire following the Slavery Abolition Act.

📅 August 1, 1920 — Marcus Garvey’s UNIA opened its historic international convention in New York City, bringing thousands of delegates and participants together from across the African world.

📅 August 2, 1920 — The UNIA convention continued at Madison Square Garden, part of a month-long gathering centered on Black unity, self-determination, and the future of African people worldwide.

📅 August 1831 — Nat Turner led one of the most significant rebellions against slavery in United States history.

📅 August 21, 1971 — George Jackson was killed at San Quentin State Prison. His life, death, and organizing became central to the development of Black August.

These are only pieces of a much larger history.

At KULC, we believe knowing our history matters, especially for our young people. Some of these stories may never make it into a classroom. That means we have a responsibility to tell them, preserve them, question them, learn from them, and pass them forward.

As Brother Lion reminds us, if we don’t tell our stories, who will?

As Black August comes to an end, may the learning, remembering, organizing, and commitment to our community continue long after August is over.

Black August is more than a month. It is a call to remember, learn, organize, and build.

At the King Urban Life Center, we honor the sacrifices of those who came before us by investing in the next generation today. Through faith, education, leadership, community organizing, and neighborhood transformation, we believe history should inspire action.

This month, we will commemorate our ancestors, educate our community, celebrate Black excellence, support political prisoners, strengthen our neighborhoods, and continue the work of creating a more just future.
