The IT Help Desk is the first point of contact for technical assistance on campus.

We have a kind and courteous staff on hand to support the computing needs of faculty, staff and students. Located on the ground floor of Butler Library, behind the at the "Ask Us" counter. Get account and login support on-campus, by phone at 878-HELP, or by email at [email protected]

We've seen a surge this year in "phishing" attempts by email and text, in some cases from individual Buffalo State accounts which had become compromised. Phishing is a kind of fraud which tries to steal sensitive info like usernames/passwords by disguising itself as a trustworthy source. These messages usually claim to be from department chairs, Buffalo State or the IT Help Desk itself, or companies like Apple/Microsoft.

Watch out for some of the WARNING SIGNS outlined below:

>>> "Too-good-to-be-true" job listings or surveys offering money

>>> Web forms asking for your passwords or personal info

>>> Unexpected Multi-Factor Verification requests

>>> Unprompted mystery files shared by unfamiliar senders

>>> “Are you free” messages asking for odd favors or contact info

When in doubt, just ignore/delete the message or forward it to the IT Help Desk at [email protected] for examination.

Attention current students! If you have an old Buff State student Gmail, it no longer receives new emails/replies.

Official campus correspondence is now directed to your Outlook email. From the MYBUFFSTATE "Toolbox" links, pick "Student E-mail" to sign-in w/ your Network credentials.

UPDATE: The Bengal Success Portal is back up and running! Thanks for your patience during the unplanned down-time.

********Original Post below***********

A quick FYI for Monday (5/8): The Bengal Success Portal is currently unavailable.

You may see an "HTTP Status 401 – Unauthorized" error at sign-in. We are working to restore access as quickly as possible and will post an update as soon as we have more information. We apologize for the inconvenience.

If you have a link or attachment that you want to be sure is safe, www.virustotal.com is a good tool to have at your side.

Started back in 2004 and currently a Google subsidiary, the site lets you paste URLs or upload files to have them tested by a range of AV products all at once.

Something to keep in mind w/ file uploads: Avoid doing it with any files that potentially contain someone's private information. The VirusTotal site *is* reliable, but still think of uploads as though you're showing whatever's in that file to a stranger.

All current students will be receiving their Outlook student email and ".edu" addresses on or before May 22. Outlook email is the newest addition to the Microsoft 365 services already available for students, which includes OneDrive cloud file storage and the Microsoft Office apps.

This transition from the older Gmail system to Outlook will result in fewer passwords to remember (it uses their existing Network password and MFA options) and better calendar and online meeting integration for Brightspace.

We have more details and an FAQ at the "Student Email Project" page linked below:
