We had a fantastic experience at the State Leadership Conference. These young people were absolutely amazing. In a time that has been challenging, to say the least, each of these leaders stepped up and out to showcase the best they could offer.

We are thankful beyond end to Mr. Clements, Mr. Freeman, and the BISD School Board for allowing them the opportunity to travel and compete in person. Undeniably, these kids were truly thankful and you could see it in their attitude, smiles, and willingness to be show what it means to be a team player. They’ve been challenged to remain grateful even when we return to “normal.”

It takes a village and we are thankful for the BISD faculty and staff for preparing these kids to showcase their talents. We appreciate Coach and Mrs. Skelton for always volunteering to evaluate and mentor our members while at conferences. Thanks to our transportation department for coordinating travel especially Mr. Frazee for the drop off and pickup.

The Family and Community Services class at Buffalo High School held a Mock Election, October 30, 2020. Hannah Travis, Aryonna Coleman, and Marie Herbert lead the project while each member of the class conducted research and created materials to support the election.

The election had four candidates. Each candidate was assigned a Spongebob character. The following characters were matched with a real candidate. Spongebob was none other than Howie Hawkins. Gary was Joe Biden. Patrick was Jo Jorgensen. A poster was created and a picture was added to the ballot so that everyone would have the information to vote. And lastly, Sandy was Donald J. Trump. After picking a character for each person, a google form was created and sent out to the student body. At the end of the election process, the Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins won in our mock election with 36.6% of the vote. Hannah Travis said, “We were surprised because we thought that Donald Trump would win.”

The class then switched focus to the actual Presidential Election on Election Day, November 3rd. One problem we faced was election fraud where students were voting more than once. We had to take those ballots out to see who actually won.

The Family and Community Services class is part of the Family and Consumer Sciences department at Buffalo High School. The course gives students the opportunity to explore and tackle real world issues. Students in this class are Jasmine Barcenas, Aryonna Coleman, Cameron Franklin, Callie Harter, Michelle Hays, Marie Herbert, Jonathan Porras, Logan Skelton, Hannah Travis, Alexander Ward, Seth Whittlesey and Connor Windham.

The one week officer training and region/state meeting plan is done! Thank you to Callie and Betsy for taking this challenge and making a virtual planning for in person meetings possible! One call we were on had over 110 individual “call ins.” And, some were socially distanced watching together so well over that number participating!
