“Why not combine academics with theatre and art?” she thought. So she approached some teachers to ask them what they were teaching in their classes. And that’s when she started teaching her students about the Civil War, or biology, for example, through poetry slams and other creative methods. She saw classroom engagement increase, and the principal offered her an administrative position. But she couldn’t accept it because she did not have a college degree. “For me, it was a missed opportunity,” she said.

PLEASE SHARE! Once again, my office is hosting a Dorm Room Drive for Say Yes Buffalo scholars who are excited to pursue the next chapter in their education, but face extreme poverty or other personal challenges. According to Say Yes, approximately 50% of students have a combined family income below $25,000, and 70% are below $55,000, making it difficult to afford the basic scholastic and personal care essentials that accompany the pursuit of a higher education. Our drive aims to send scholars into their first semesters fully prepared, both inside and outside the classroom. With your help, we can do just that.
