In 2023, they became the first Deaf Americans to summit Mount Everest, with Shayna becoming the first Deaf woman to reach the summit. Their journey has taken them to some of the world's highest peaks while overcoming barriers to communication, access, and participation along the way.

Something special is coming to Buffalo.

As part of SMSD’s Deaf Awareness Week celebration, we are proud to launch our new Distinguished Speaker Series, bringing accomplished Deaf speakers to Buffalo to share their stories and experiences with our community.

Our inaugural speakers are Scott Lehmann and Shayna Unger, Deaf mountaineers, educators, and storytellers who have made history around the world.

🍦 Summer School Fun = Hands-On Learning! 🍦

Summer school is a great time to learn through hands-on experiences! Today, our students had a blast making homemade ice cream in a bag. 🥛🧊

They mixed, shook, and worked together—and then enjoyed the delicious results! 😋🍨

Learning is always sweeter when you can eat your experiment! ❤️
