Ms. Pfleger of Tonawanda is coming to King Center from Grand Island Schools. She is an Oswego State University and Buffalo State graduate. Emily has worked in a Feature Film and 2 short films here in our Queen City. She enjoys traveling and has already adventured in European countries and Russia!

We are deeply grateful to Project Flight and the King Urban Life Center for including King Center Charter School in this meaningful project.

Through the Literacy Library Collection for Equity, Social Justice & Peace, our students will receive access to books that encourage literacy, promote understanding and inspire important conversations about equity, peace and community. This generous donation also serves as a powerful tribute to the lives lost in the May 14 tragedy and reflects what is possible when community partners come together to invest in our children and our East Side community.

Thank you for placing books—and possibility—into the hands of our scholars. We are honored to be part of this lasting legacy.

King Urban Life Center is receiving a major addition geared toward improving literary access on Buffalo’s East Side.

A literal ton or more of reading will now be in store for students visiting the King Center. Project Flight, a nonprofit organization that works to improve literacy in the community, is providing just over 2,000 books that will be gifted to students from King Center Charter School and BRICK Buffalo Academy Charter School.

What happens when a nonprofit leader gets the opportunity to step away from the day-to-day and think bigger?

For Tamaira Barlow, it meant a week at Harvard Business School that challenged her perspective on leadership, systems, mission, and partnerships.

As an HBS Club of Buffalo scholarship recipient, Tamaira attended the July 2026 in-person Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management program alongside nonprofit leaders from around the world.
She returned to Buffalo with more than new frameworks and strategies. She came home with a renewed understanding of what it means to create the conditions for solutions, and a renewed confidence in what she brings to the table as a leader.

As she reflected on the experience:
“Leadership isn't always about controlling the system; sometimes it's about making sure the right system exists.”

That kind of perspective matters.
And when local nonprofit leaders have the opportunity to learn, connect, and bring those lessons home, the impact reaches far beyond the classroom.

We’re proud to support leaders like Tamaira who are taking what they learn and putting it to work for Buffalo!

For Tamaira Barlow, Executive Director of King Center Charter School, the opportunity to attend the July 2026 Harvard Business School ’s Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management program was more than a week of professional development. It was an opportunity to step outside the day-to-day demands of nonprofit leadership, challenge her thinking, and return home with a new perspective.

A longtime Buffalo resident and mission-driven executive leader, Tamaira has led transformational work at King Center since 2019, strengthening systems, advancing organizational sustainability, building high-performing teams, and deepening relationships with students, families, and the broader community.

Through the HBS Club of Buffalo’s scholarship program, local nonprofit leaders like Tamaira have the opportunity to bring their experience and perspective to a global classroom, and then bring what they learn back to Western New York.

That exchange is at the heart of what we believe in: investing in leaders who are investing in our community.

We’re proud to have supported Tamaira on this journey and excited to see how her experience continues to shape her leadership at King Center and beyond.
