Register now for the UB History and Asian Studies conference on Asian Interpretations of Global War: WWII in Fiction and Poetry! World War II and related conflicts shaped Asia profoundly. Historical accounts rightly emphasize how mid-20th-century wars contributed to decolonization, the realignment of global politics that gave birth to the Cold War and the non-aligned movement, mass migration, and other phenomena of global significance. Many more perspectives on the effects of war are evident in Asian-language fiction and poetry that is as yet little known beyond the regions in which it was produced. Our conference brings together scholars who focus on literary accounts of the war(s) that emerged in different Asian localities and assess how they challenge or supplement conventional accounts of the world war.

The Details: September 24 and 25 in the Buffalo Room, 10 Capen Hall, UB North Campus. To attend the conference virtually, register at the link in our bio!

What adventures did you have this summer? History prof Jenifer Barclay was awarded the 2026 Germany Residency Program in American History, sponsored by the Organization of American Historians and funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation. In June and July, she spent nearly six weeks at the University of Tübingen where she taught a seminar for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, “Through an Intersectional Lens: U.S. Deaf and Disability History.” She also collaborated with Tübingen faculty Nadja Klopprogge and Clara Höhn as well as University of Augsburg faculty Britta Waldschmidt-Nelson to organize two virtual events – one for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, the other for early career historians – to facilitate connections between scholars located in the United States, Germany, and Canada. One of these events, the inaugural “young scholars’ workshop,” will be a regular feature of the residency program going forward. Barclay also gave a public talk on disability and contested responsibility in the history of American slavery and enjoyed many events on and off campus. Most memorable for her was a July celebration of the U.S. semiquincentennial hosted by the German American Institute Tübingen at the stunning Kloster Bebenhausen, a medieval monastery complex in Baden-Württemberg, that was attended by U.S. Consul General Brian Heath.

To end their semester in HIS/AS 367: Food in Asia, Dr. Yan Liu asked his students to cook a dish based on a historical or contemporary Asian recipe and present it to their classmates. Five students presented six different dishes, coming from various regions in Asia, resulting in a delicious end of year banquet! We’re glad UB photographer Meredith Kutwicki was there to grab some pictures.
