The Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences - University at Buffalo is fondly remembering Charles V. Paganelli Jr., PhD, who passed on May 23, 2026. 💙

Paganelli spent more than four decades on faculty at the Jacobs School, rising to the rank of SUNY Distinguished Service Professor.

He played a central role in guiding the Department of Physiology, serving multiple terms as interim chair and for many years as associate chair, contributing to a culture of excellence in cardiopulmonary and environmental physiology that continues today.

Colleagues and former students recall Paganelli’s thoughtful demeanor, intellectual curiosity and steady guidance. He had a gift for making complex physiological concepts accessible and encouraging students to think deeply about the natural world.

New technologies, collaborations, and teaching practices are all changing modern pediatrics. 🧸

But some of the best approaches come down to age-old methods: listen to what patients and parents have to say and don't forget to find joy in helping a child grow up healthy.

That's just some of the advice from two renowned longtime pediatricians, Lucy Mastrandrea, MD, PhD, and Benny Joyner, MD, MPH.

There's much more. 🎧Listen to episode 16 of the Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences - University at Buffalo UB Medicine podcast! http://ms.spr.ly/6181v9n8t

Drones, video games, surgical simulation, teamwork, and competition — sound like fun? 🕹️

It’s all part of the UB Drone STEM program and annual competition, which was hosted by the Department of Surgery at the Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences - University at Buffalo May 20 and 21.

Built around the concept of “stealth learning,” the program brings students from Title 1 public schools in Buffalo to engage them in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine. Students fly simulated drones, solve challenges, and practice communication and technical skills.

This year, the program welcomed elementary through high school students, encouraging them to see themselves as pilots, engineers, clinicians, designers, leaders, and as part of the future of innovation. 🚀

Everyone learned a lot and, most importantly, had fun!

It was a year ago already that Chantazia “Shay” Bronson, MPH, received “30 Under 30” designation from Buffalo Business First, but an honor like this deserves ongoing recognition!

Bronson has focused her career on eliminating race-based health inequities in the region, with a focus on those experienced by African Americans.

As a program operations manager at UB’s Health Equity Research Institute (CHERI), Bronson has had an outsized influence on advancing the center’s mission.

She’s been instrumental in creating a community health ambassador program in Buffalo and boosting community engagement in public health through events like the institute’s annual Research Day.

And that’s just the beginning. Read all about Bronson and her community-driven work! http://ms.spr.ly/6184vdCpn
