We’re partnering with Hilbert College to help future social workers complete their education faster — and at lower cost. 🙌

Through a new 3+2 option, students can earn their bachelor’s degree at Hilbert and their Master of Social Work at in five years, thereby shaving off a year from the typical full-time course of study. The 3+2 option is open to Hilbert undergrads in the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Bachelor of Science in Human Services programs.

This week, held a reception to celebrate first-year recipients of several fellowships. Pictured here, from left, is Dean Keith A. Alford with Presidential Fellows Idowu Adeyemo and Iruoma Ogueze, as well as Lisa Gagnon, fellowships and scholarships advisor for UB.

Idowu and Iruoma also had the opportunity to meet UB President Caroline Attardo Genco, PhD, at the reception.

Our congratulations also go to PhD in Social Welfare students Heejun Lee, who received a Graduate School Fellowship, and Ava Lockwood and Tiffany Nhan, who received the Arthur. A. Schomburg Fellowship. Congratulations to all! 🎉

Drawing from 15 years of child welfare experience, Ericka Garcia, DSW ’26, used trauma-focused CBT with staff at a foster care program in her capstone project. Through implementation science, staff experience increased appreciation and support for using TF-CBT. 🙌

As we continue to spotlight recent DSW capstones, today we feature Eric P. Ruiz, DSW ’26, who used implementation science to enhance the self-efficacy of mental health professionals working with individuals with mental health diagnoses and intellectual and developmental disabilities. 🙌

For her DSW capstone, Melissa Elliott-Brogan, DSW ’26, created an evidence-informed intervention called the Holistic Resilience Recharge (HRR) to address the effects of trauma work on social workers. 👋 The project was guided by implementation science.

This week, we’re featuring five outstanding capstone projects from our last DSW cohort. Through their capstones, DSW students design, implement and evaluate an evidence-based intervention and make an immediate impact at their agency.

First up: Tammie S. Williams-Pittman, DSW ’26, who partnered with BIPOC high school students in Long Island, NY, for her DSW capstone project addressing the civic empowerment gap and gaps in motivation, knowledge and confidence. “Civic Fridays” allowed students to explore how to make a civic impact in their own community. 💙

Tiffany J. Nhan, MSW/PhD Student, shares her last post from her international placement. 🌏

Xinh chào from Việt Nam, as I wrap up my final days here, I am reminded of how grateful I got to have this experience! I learned so much about the social work framework in Việt Nam. This experience has elevated the ways I think about policy and implementation. I also got to learn more about my culture and heritage. One of my favorite closing experiences was engaging in the art culture, which ranged from traditional to modern art. I don't often get to see people who look like me in art spaces, so that was truly a treat! Lastly, I got to connect with extended family, who, despite meeting for the first time, took me in with open arms. I am so grateful that I got to learn more about my family's history and Việt Nam from local contexts.
