RSM - Buffalo Grove / Wheeling RSM-Buffalo Grove is a branch of the Russian School of Mathematics, an award winning, after-school math program for K-12 students.

Since 1997, RSM has helped children develop math fluency, intellect, and character, empowering them for life. At RSM-Wheeling/Buffalo Grove, we believe that a quality mathematics education is one of the most powerful tools a child can gain. As an alternative to math tutoring in the Wheeling and Buffalo Grove community, RSM is not only for students who intend to study math in college or become mathematicians. It’s designed to widen students’ opportunities in all fields by fostering enhanced logic and critical thinking skills, math-specific abilities, and a deep appreciation for the subject.

We are excited to share some wonderful news from the RSM community. This week, FOX 5 New York visited RSM Manhattan for a segment exploring the question, “What is Russian math?”

The story offers a glimpse into why so many families choose to make math part of their children’s after-school activities and highlights an idea at the heart of RSM’s approach: math education is not simply about formulas and correct answers. It helps children develop reasoning, problem-solving skills, and confidence in how they think.

One comparison in the segment especially resonated with us: just as children participate in sports to exercise and strengthen their bodies, mathematics gives them an opportunity to exercise and strengthen their minds.

We are proud to see the work happening across RSM recognized in this way and thought our families would enjoy seeing the story as well. Thank you for your continued trust in RSM and for allowing us to be part of your child’s educational journey.

One of our goals at RSM is to instill in our students a mathematical mindset. This means helping our students develop:

- The ability to reason
- The ability to navigate the abstract
- A strong intellectual character, built from persisting through challenging problems

A mathematical mindset not only results in strong math skills, but also self-assured students. Students who are repeatedly shown that their reasoning, understanding, and taste for persistence give them the confidence to solve extremely challenging concepts.

Today we celebrate the women who inspire confidence, curiosity, and a love of learning every day. Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible moms in the RSM community!

From encouraging curiosity to building confidence, moms play a powerful role in every child’s learning journey, both in and beyond the classroom. This Mother’s Day, we asked a few RSM students and alumni to share their perspective on their moms, who also happen to be teachers and leaders at RSM.

Happy Mother's Day!
