Matt shares how even modest inclusion rates of engineered wood fiber can meaningfully influence air porosity, water management, and overall crop performance.

“Supply chain disruptions affecting Canadian sphagnum peat moss and coconut coir — including shipping delays, tariffs and price volatility — have prompted growers to seek more stable alternatives. Domestically produced wood fiber can offer more predictable supply and lead times for U.S. growers. Our team spent last week in Saskatchewan following Canadian sphagnum peat from bog to bale, alongside growers and researchers from University of Florida, Virginia Tech, USDA-ARS, and West Creek Farms. We toured the Norquay processing plant, watched harvesting near Usherville, and got a closer look at Sunterra’s transition to the new ProfilePeat™ brand.

We love seeing what our clients grow—and Altman Plants never disappoints. 🌋 There’s no “Mount Firesticks” on any map, but at one of Altman Plants’ cactus & succulent nurseries, this Euphorbia-covered slope is impossible to miss.
Planted nearly seven years ago, it’s an active mother stock zone, where the Altman team takes cuttings year-round to grow their supply of Euphorbia tirucalli ‘Firesticks’ (aka ‘Sticks on Fire’).

What lights it up? Cool weather. San Diego’s crisp days draw out those fiery pigments—looking forward to the cool down and the glow up in the coming months and proud to be part of how trusted growers like Altman do what they do best.

Facing peat shortages and rising costs, the Lucas team wanted to reduce reliance on peat and perlite without sacrificing quality. Working with their longtime substrate supplier, they dialed in a mix that stayed cost-effective, reliably available, and consistent crop after crop. The result? Plants their customers said were better prepared for the retail shelf. 💚
