I have been working with photography since my early teens. I started by working in a county newspaper, developing and printing the photos for each weeks edition. After a couple of years of darkroom experience, I finally picked up a camera and started shooting for myself. I have been after it ever since, now going on almost fifty years of experience!

Some of you may be disappointed in these photos, after all that I have been saying about this special mushroom project. To be honest, the mushroom isn't the important part. Playing with, shaping, and blending light was the whole purpose of the exercise, but on a little-bitty scale. It is EASY to light big subjects. But with small ones, you really have to be careful and exact where and how you place the light. While these photos aren't really "WOW!" images, they do represent some precise lighting techniques, from knowing the color palate, blending ratios, light modifiers (flags, scrims, and grids), and simply being willing to lay down in wet grass for an hour moving the gear by meer millimeters. I had fun with it!

Yesterday, I did some "shrooms!" Yep, I found a wild mushroom and just had to ... ... take some pictures of it.

I decided on the compositions that I wanted while the sun was still up. Right before sundown, I started setting up the lights, and then it was about an hour of lying in the wet grass getting everything "just right." I will post the edits later, but thought you might like to see a little of the process first.

Thank You to Kathy McCrain for these "behind the scenes" pictures.

Last nights aurora display was spectacular! It started with a low, single "cloud" stretching from east to west, then changed to dancing pillars reaching high into the sky, and then culminated in a swirling mass of green, yellow, and red lights. Not a bad way to end my time near Fairbanks!
